List of FTO characters who couldn't or still can't read and/or write (in some way):

Mario — my guy was raised by a Dragon, I love Aerthus but she isn't teaching it how to read or write, even then he's from another Region that does not speak in Leo's Tongue. Throughout s4 he is in the slow process of learning, but they keep it to himself because David would never let him live it down. By s5 they're competent at reading and writing.

Blake — she's from a poorer part of Cancer, so while they got they chance to learn spoken Leo's Tongue (especially when people began to immigrate to the area after the Famine), it never had the education to learn how to read or write in it. Throughout s5 he's making an effort to learn but is still a little dependent on others to understand.

Inmo — from the Taurus Region so, to beat the dead horse, could not speak Leo's Tongue upon first arrival. Could barely read or write in Taurus' Tongue as she was forced to flee after destroying their village at a young age. Zaro taught them everything after taking him under his wing. By s5 is mostly competent at writing and speaking, not so much at reading, which leads them easy to swindle.

Allumos — could speak basic modern sentences in Leo's Tongue, which they learnt from watching Mael and Pádraig for a short time. However he is only fluent in, read and write in an ancient, runic form of Leo's Tongue, which means a lot of the modern dialect and slang still gets lost on it. Thankfully, sharing a body with Pádraig gave it an advantage at picking it up.

Menodora — largely due to their amnesia, at times is perfectly capable to read and write, other times they need some help.

Eliore — like Allumos, can read and write and speak in the old form of Leo's Tongue, but when faced with the modern dialect he was completely lost. They picked it up very quickly though.

Mania — was like 7 when the Dragons first attacked so, besides the fact it's from another world, they never got to learn how to read and write. In s5, she kinda makes an effort to learn but has a bit of a "I won't stay here so why bother" mindset.

Cecil — being homeless, he was never taught how to read or write, can speak Leo's Tongue easily though. Flurry, upon finding out he can't read or write, took it upon herself to teach him.

Mori — similar situation to Inmo, never got the chance to learn and at this point is not bothered to.

Leo's Tongue is essentially the common language in Earthland, as it was popularised after the defeat of the Dragons in the War 1000 years ago. Each region has its own variants of Leo's Tongue that is kinda melded with their regional language. They still most commonly speak their own language however, Leo's Tongue is more like a second language people who can afford a slightly more advanced education learn.

The proficiency within the rest of the cast varies, these are merely the most 'extreme' cases, or ones that are most relevant to the timeline of s4-5 (for example, Kayla used to not be able to speak in Leo, since she was raised by foxes in Virgo, however before the events of s4 she learned it).
