lonely (Deathdancer - Ailin POV)
âYou werenât what they wanted, so they cut you loose,â Ailin finished softly, risking a glance at his face. He nodded, lips tight.
âThe Oasis was always supposed to be home,â he said, almost to himself. âLegacy and loyalty, and all that. But people turn on you when you arenât enough. Privilege is lonely, and leaving it is lonelier.â
wrecked (Firetide Rising 3)
âPeople keep telling me Iâm at war.â [said Kina]
âYou want to leave the world better than you found it,â Tai said, simply. âAnd as sad as it is, thereâs a price on that. A price most people arenât willing to pay.â
âIs that supposed to make me feel important?â
âI just want you to understand that, for better or worse, youâre more than just you now. Youâre the embers. Youâre about to be an inferno, whether youâre prepared for it or not.â
Iâm not.
âYouâre part of it,â she said, as he watched her quietly, waiting for an answer.
âYouâre the revolutionary, Kina, not me. Iâm just along for the ride.â
This isnât a ride. Itâs a shipwreck waiting to happen.
âEveryone thinks I have the answers now,â she whispered, meeting his eyes. âBut I donât. Dragonstorms, Tai, I donât."
monday
knives
Ailin stood in the dust. Knives heavy in her hands, she flexed her toes as the crowd cheered.
easy (Deathdancer - Ailin POV)
Her [Ailin's] voice sounded like a strangers. She hated it when that happened, when everything went so numb that her mind locked itself in a glass box. It was easy to be impersonal when emotions never bubbled to the surface, and that was dangerous.
If you were going to do terrible things, you needed to understand the consequences.
BONUS
smoke (Deathdancer - Ailin POV)
Ailin took a deep breath, nearly chocking on perfume, and tossed the candle. Heat blazed across her, and she scrambled back a few paces before the fire could actually catch. The candle landed on his chest.
With a terrible whoosh, fire exploded, raging sand caught in the wind. Ailin retreated to the door, smoke already billowing as the curtains caught fire, flames skittering up the fabric.
âIâm sorry,â Ailin whispered again. The fire overtook him, and Ailin couldnât watch.
mirror
At the top of the roof, Ailin paused, turning back. The Oasis glittered, a black mirror filled with stars. The moon had barely begun to set, casting silver through the firelight. There was still time left for work.

Wool (Deathdancer - Ailin POV)
Ailin rubbed her temple, the worn wool of her scarf rough on her face, struggling to think. She had no idea what to do next. What did an assassin say to the target they were trying to save?
Wood (Deathdancer - Ailin POV)
Left alone, Ailin stared at the door for a moment, almost holding her breath. The candle fluttered innocently, dim gold brushing the shadows of charred carpet and wood, and no one came charging in to arrest her.
Mountain (Firetide Rising 3)
Very carefully, Kina stood up, scanning around. The sun was setting, final traces of fire slipping below the horizon as the sky began darkening to dusk.
She was in something akin to a city, surrounded by incomprehensibly massive buildings of obsidian and coral bricks, some with towering glass windows three times Kinaâs height. The structures here utterly dwarfed her, sized more for a being like Lusedan or Solesal [dragons].
Sheâd been here before, once, as a child. In a Dream she only half-remembered, and hadnât had since.
In the distance, the mountain rose farther above her, a temple-like structure hewn from the obsidian itself.
Grave Serious (Deathdancer - Ailin POV)
âStill,â Ailin added, unable to resist a little teasing, âprobably best we donât let you get too bored for a bit.â
Zaul snorted this time, choking slightly before recovering his breath.
âLittle late for that,â he said. âIâm seriously considering dissembling the furniture to see if I can put it back together again.â
Ailin considered him. There was a solid chance he wasnât even remotely kidding.

abyss (Deathdancer - Zaul POV) yes Zaul has weird time magic, no I will not elaborate yet lol
Zaul stared at him, glancing between the covered faces and impassive set of their shoulders. Wherever he was going, he definitely wasnât getting out of it alive.
He kicked the man as hard as he could in the groin. He yelped, doubling over, and Zaul bolted. He crashed through another figure, and immediately someone slammed in to his back.
They crashed to the brick street, and this time something definitely crunched in Zaulâs chest. Pain exploded, vision flashing dangerously. Zaul tried to buck the person off, but he could barely move. He could barely breath.
âDead it is,â said a calm voice in his ear. Metal ran nearby.
It was time to go.
Zaul closed his eyes, and dived into the abyss.
abandon (Deathdancer - Ailin POV)
âIâve got to be honest,â said Zaul abruptly, very deliberately not looking at her. âThis is not what I expected Iâd be doing with my life a few days ago.â
âSame, I suppose.â
âYou suppose?â he blurted, immediately abandoning his determination to avoid her face.
âWell,â she said, slightly taken aback, âI donât usually do this with other people.â
âBut you do this on a regular basis?â
âWhen the situation calls for it?â
âWhat situation?â
Ailin hesitated. Survival sounded decidedly over-dramatic.
Eventually, she settled on, "More than you'd think."
ally alley (Deathdancer - Ailin POV) in which Zaul is Not Good at attempting to tail Ailin
As the stranger passed the window, Ailin swung out, hooking a foot into the back of their knee. They yelped, and she spun them easily, slamming them into the opposite wall, dagger against their throat.
For an instant, neither of them moved. Big, dark eyes stared at her through a tumble of dreadlocs and heavy scarf.
Familiar eyes.
âBy Hazarys,â Ailin swore softly, not releasing him. âWhat are you doing here? You should have left.â
âHi,â he squeaked.
Very slowly, Ailin stepped back. There was only a foot of space between them, the alley far too narrow for anything else.
absence (Deathdancer - Ailin POV)
Ailin took a deep breath, and turned her back on him, slipping the dagger away. There was no sudden rush of movement, no sweeping sensation from a surprise attack the second her eyes were off him. He just stood there, waiting quietly, seemingly oblivious to the terrifying absence of sensation in her time-sense.
How long had it been, since sheâd turned her back on someone without so much as a flicker of violence?
armor shield (Firetide Rising 3)
From here, Kina could see the second ship approaching. It looked like a Senui three-masted warship, wide and stout for stability, with shielded perches for archers along the front and back masts. Sheâd only seen one once before, docked in Port Obsidian for emergency repairs after a storm. Theyâd hired the salvage crew to help with the underwater repairs instead of the hassle of dry-docking.
The sky dragon roared, clouds crackling dangerously with lighting. A few distant rumbles filled the air, lightning growing.
They were running out of time.

Deep (Deathdancer - Ailin POV)
Ailin took a deep breath, falling into a crouch. She flipped the parrying knife in her left hand, bracing it lightly under the hilt of her own scimitar.
She tried to push down thoughts of bookies and gamblers, already planning on her victory. Theyâd set the odds 5-to-1 against her tonight, counting on her to earn them a month of wages in this one fight.
Ailin almost preferred the fights she was supposed to lose.
dear
dream (Firetide Rising 3)
As suddenly as the strangeness had started, it was gone. Everything snapped back in place, like a sail sheet in a storm. Kina blinked, refocusing to the sudden lose of enhanced senses.
âSomething is happening to me,â she muttered, heart beating a little too hard, throbbing in her vision even as she tried to blink it away. âI donât know how reliable I can be.â
âYou felt in control to me,â said Tino. âBut you use magic like some people have perfect pitch. Itâs instinctive. You might just be starting to access new levels of subconscious use.â
âMaybe.â
It wasnât comforting. Unconscious magic had resulted in uncontrollable dreams for most of her life, and she hadnât learned to control them quickly or easily. Now, on the brink of war, didnât seem like the time to start the process all over again.
dare (Deathdancer - Zaul POV)
Dymas gaped at him, mouth hanging open. If Zaulâs ears werenât buzzing with fury, he would have laughed. It had been a long time since he hadnât wanted to laugh.
âHow dare you speak to me like that,â Dynas rasped out, eventually.
âFine. Maybe Iâm done. Youâre lucky Iâm not Ailin, because without her you are screwed in every last infinite future there is.â
Zaulâs voice was loud. Far too loud. He forced himself to stop talking, blood pounding like fire in his face.
dark (Deathdancer - Zaul POV)
Zaul landed in the dark alleyway, head spinning. He caught the wall, breathing hard through his nose, echoes of pain vibrating in his ribs and the base of his skull.
Something siphoned through him, threading unpleasantly through every little nook in his mind, every tiny space of his body.
A familiar thrum settled around him, stilling the world back into reality.
He didnât remember why heâd done it. Couldn't remember what he'd run from. All he could come up with were quick flashes. Sharpness on his throat. Shadowy figures in the dark.

Floor (Deathdancer - Ailin POV) in which Ailin was attempting to teach Zaul how to fight.
She [Ailin] couldnât lash out. In the arena, a broken nose was nothing. Training in an attic hideout was an entirely different matter.
Darkness swirled, black sand swarming the room. A terrible whine rose to met it, the hollow ringing of death emptying her head.
Zaul let go.
Ailin fell, muscles not cooperating. Two sets of hands caught her face, and she couldnât tell which ones were real and which werenât.
Was she blacking out? Or was that just a future where Zaul hadnât let go in time?
TTSSSSSSSSSSNNNNNNNN. The ringing rose, tones that didnât belong together overlapping painfully.
More hands grabbed her shoulders, trying to turn her. She couldnât count them anymore, couldnât tell real from phantom, couldnât tell present from future. She lashed out, her whole body crawling with scorpions, at the joints that would force him to let her go. Her blows connected with air.
âAilin!â
The floor rumbled, and the grasping hands vanished. The world went silent, time vibrating to incredible stillness against her skin.
Breath in. Breath out.
The breaths were far too fast. She slowed them gradually, careful to keep them shallower than she wanted. The buzzing quieted, the tingling slipping away.
âAilin?â
Zaulâs voice was at least six feet away, quiet and scared.
âHnnggh.â
âYou good?â
âIâm grand,â she muttered. Her voice was a strangers, distant and flat. A hollow echo of what it should be.
fly (Firetide Rising 3)
Koruni [Kina's sister] just took another deep breath, and nodded.
âYou understand this is treason, right?â asked Kina, softly.
âBetter treason than betray my sister again.â
âYou never betrayed me.â
âI am not letting anyone take you away again,â hissed Koruni, spit flying. âYou already died once, Kina. I am not mourning you again.â
free + felt (Deathdancer - Zaul POV)
âThat your final choice?â asked the man at the door.
âIf I say no will you let me pick something else?â
âNah.â
âThan I suppose itâs my final choice,â Zaul managed, dry mouth catching the words.
Final choice indeed. There was something deeply unsatisfying about his last act of free will being to choose weapon he was bad with from a selection he was terrible with.
It felt deeply unreal. Like it was all some big joke, like whatever came next wasnât actually coming. Not properly. Not permanently.
friend (Deathdancer -Ailin POV)
âDid you talk to Dymas?â asked Zaul.
âDo you still want to help?â Ailin countered.
The easy smile faded, his face settling into a remarkably sharp focus. He had the most expressive eyebrows Ailin had ever seen, like the friendlier dogs that worked in the agriculture and livestock districts, or traveled with the caravans.
âI wouldnât have offered if I wasnât serious about it,â Zaul said, holding her gaze. âI donât make promises lightly, and I donât make promises I wonât keep.â

frost ice (Firetide Rising 3)
Water closed over Kinaâs head, and she kicked out, heading straight down, Taiâs shadow moving beside her. She grabbed his arm, guiding him in the darkness as they raced for the ocean floor, rushing to get ahead of the magical freeze she knew was coming.
Sure enough, the water above them was already chilling, the waves creaking with ice. Kina popped her ears thirty feet down, racing the frigid magic even as her muscles tried to seize against the cold. She pulled in magic, fueling her muscles, giving herself extra energy for the dive.
crown (Firetide Rising 3)
âWhereâs Haku?â asked Nali, quietly.
âIâll deal with Haku,â snapped Maile.
âIf he touches Kina again, Iâll kill him,â said Nali, simply. She held Maileâs eyes, long fingers twisting into hard fists.
âIâm sure you will,â shrugged Maile. âAlthough I canât protect you from the consequences of killing the crown-promised.â
âYouâve never protected me from anything in my life, and you certainly arenât about to start. Donât pretend otherwise.â
Maile raised her eyebrows, staring at Nali with a barely contained glare for an instant. Nali stared back, cold lines burying any traces of the excitable scholar Kina could usually find in her face.
eternally (Deathdancer - Ailin POV)
Ailin gritted her teeth, refusing to consider why she was here, and vaulted a low aqueduct into the outer garden.
Elaborate bronze and copper sconces with huge torches were scattered through the plants, along meticulously swept brick paths. It was blindingly green here, water from the Oasis feeding swaths of demanding foreign trees and bushes.
A large marble-tiled fountain bubbled in the center. In the water stood a massive bronze statue of a humanoid figure with a working sundial head.
Hazarys, the eternal god. Guardian of the past, guide of the future. Time made divine.
Time-touched were said to be descendants of Hazarys. That was why Aramzind had never been without an Oracle, in this thousand-year-old city that had birthed divinity in the heart of their Oasis.
Ailin spared the statue a glance as she darted past, leaving the splashing water behind her. Unprompted, her toes stung, and she shifted her stride to avoid the brick she should have tripped on.
âI suppose Iâm supposed to think you for that,â she muttered, glancing back at the statue.
Predictably, Hazarys didnât answer. How could they? They were divine time, not some distant relative to be avoided at parties. Time didnât make for a good conversation partner.
home (Deathdancer - Ailin POV)
âIâm not just a clerk,â Zaul muttered. âI never was. I had teachers who always told me I had to be ready to fight, but I had other people who made sure I never had to. And then when I wasnât what they wantedâŠâ he trailed off.
âYou werenât what they wanted, so they cut you loose,â Ailin finished softly, risking a glance at his face. He nodded, lips tight.
âThe Oasis was always supposed to be home,â he said, almost to himself. âLegacy and loyalty, and all that. But people turn on you when you arenât enough. Privilege is lonely, and leaving it is lonelier.â
âAnything is lonely if you donât have a choice.â
summer sun (Deathdancer - Ailin POV)
Safely out of sight on the roof, Ailin collapsed. She rolled onto her back, eyes closed against the burning afternoon sun, and released her body.
Sensation exploded, crawling through her all at once. Her chest spasmed, catching with a future where she coughed.
Ailin let it happen. For a moment, her muscles ran wild, thrashing like a mouse caught by a constrictor. It was always worse after a fight, especially if she had to repress herself in the aftermath.
The twitching passed, fading unsteadily to stillness. Ailin lay still, trembling with a thousand futures all at once.

voice (Deathdancer - Zaul POV)
âDymas?â asked Zaul, blinking at him.
ââŠNo?â
âWhat are you doing?â Zaul glanced around, heart racing, but there was no one with him. âYou hate the cold.â
He was wearing plain, slightly mis-matched clothes. The robes and underclothes were clearly from different sets, and his scarf was sized more like a womanâs.
Dymas took a hesitant step back, not answering. Zaulâs stomach clenched slighty. Dymas was many things, and hesitant had never been one of them.
âWhatâs going on? Are you okay?â
âIâm not Dymas,â he said, in what was obviously Dymasâs voice.
vary (Deathdancer - Ailin POV)
Dymas had been on her [Ailin]. But this young man, he wasnât. He was a stranger whoâd gotten himself into whatever this mess was all on his own. It wasnât Ailinâs place to solve his problems.
ExceptâŠheâs going to die.
âI want to fight him,â she heard her voice, words forming without consciousness.
Everyone in the spectator box rounded on her, with varying levels of shock.
very (Deathdancer - Ailin POV)
Ailin frowned. Zaul had always seemed such an open book. Suddenly she wasnât so sure. Unease prickled in her chest, and she swallowed carefully.
âAny connection to an Oracle creates expectations,â Zaul added. âItâs not a big deal, Ailin. I promise.â
âNo offense, but in my experience âI promiseâ is just something people say when theyâre trying to get you to believe a lie.â
âYou and I have had very different experiences,â he said, giving her a sad little smile.
vein (Firetide Rising 3)
âYouâre not a mage,â snapped her father.
Kina wasnât. It stung deeper than it should have, hearing her father say it.
But she was close enough.
Most mages used their breath as a focus, had a telltale inhale as they sucked in magic to use. Some favored breathing through their nose, others their mouth. It didnât matter, anyone who had spent any time around mages would recognize the inhale that came before the magic.
Kina didnât move.
Her heart beat, once, and she dragged in magic with it. Energy crackled in her chest, racing through her blood, crackling dangerously in every vein and tendon and bone.
