Funny Things That Run Through Your Head At Odd Times:
Or not so funny, in this case: the Minneapolis Police Office (well, ex officer) who was arrested on Friday for the death of George Floyd is named Derek Chauvin. The name Chauvin is the root, if the story is to be believed, that led to the word chauvinism.

The man had been, as he thought of it "doing a Mr. Rogers," changing into a pair of more comfortable shoes at his desk when the fire alarm went off, sending everyone streaming out of the building.
As he went down the stairs, something about his feet kept bothering him, but it wasn't until he was clear of the all-too-ear-piercing screech of the alarm and outside that he realized what: he was wearing one shoe from each pair, and while they were the same brand and style, one shoe was easily ten years older (and hence more broken in and comfortable) than the other, which made a difference that was just notable enough to be bothersome now that he was safe from immolation.
Standing on the sidewalk as smoke began to drift upwards from somewhere, as the wail of fire engines grew louder on the street, he wondered if he would get to put both pairs back together.
