This is about the 2025 nascar cup series championship race.
Basically, in the field of 38 drivers, four were racing for the championship. Denny Hamlin, Chase Briscoe, Kyle Larson, and William Byron. All they had to do to win the championship was win ahead of the other 3, no matter where that was.
I'll tl;dr here. Hamlin qualified on pole and led 208/319 laps.
Larson ended up in the back at one point.
With just a few laps to go, with Hamlin substantially in the lead, Byron blew a tire and caused a caution. Everyone came to pit road. Hamlin took four tires while Larson took two, along with like several others. So there were five people between Hamlin and Larson.
This was nascar overtime. You have two laps once the green falls, presuming there's no more cautions.
Despite not having a good car, Larson beat Hamlin, who had a kickass car, for the championship.
(To make matters worse, Hamlin's 44, got a couple years of racing left, is a future Hall-of-famer, is the #10 winningest driver in nascar cup series history, and has never won the championship before. He was desperately trying to get it, not just for him, but for his dying dad.
And fucking suspended-from-nascar-a-few-years-ago-to-take-sensitivity-courses-for-using-the-n-word-on-publically-available-radio Larson with a shit car won the championship. Without even having a good car.)
