Oh so yesterday at work I was calling a durable medical equipment company and instead of an automated system, they had an AI virtual assistant that picked up. Told me their name and the speech pattern was somewhat normal but definitely off enough that I could tell. I asked it outright if they were AI, to which they replied, "Yes, I am an AI assistant trained to help you with all of your needs."
I kept trying to say the patient's name and they couldn't understand the first name. I ended up just asking for a live agent. But when I kept telling them that the name was wrong, they said, "Oh, my mistake. Let's try that again." It was a bizarre experience.
The creepiest thing about it was there was a noise track going on in the background to make it sound like they were sitting in an office, but there was the same distinct laugh repeating itself every 30 secs.
Anyhow yeah AI is real and it's already taking the place of actual jobs and it's more cumbersome than helpful in these stages. A lot of the pharmacies in my area have started screening calls with AI assistants and I often have to hang up and call a couple times because the fucking assholes can't understand what I'm saying and start going down incorrect prompt paths, but yet when I call back and say the same thing, suddenly it's fine.
So either AI is still a blunder or I have rocks in my mouth when I talk.
