the plane that kept flying over the stadium today during the ENTIRE Jannik match was a paid actor to underline the Jannik-in-sensory-overload prompt I sent the other day🙂↕️
It really was! It was giving *me* the overwhelm at times, that's constant whine/buzz was really starting to get to me.
Poor Jannik, no wonder he was trying to get off the court quickly again. It's a good job Darren's learning how to take care of him when he's heading towards a shutdown.
He doesn’t push him to talk on the way back.
That’s the first thing Darren learns - or maybe unlearns. No questions, no 'what’s wrong,' no trying to problem-solve it out of him. Just… quiet. He keeps things steady, predictable. Same route, same pace, same low voice if he speaks at all.
By the time they get to the hotel, Jannik’s already halfway gone - not dramatic, not obvious, just… distant. Edges pulled in.
Darren handles it like defusing something delicate.
Lights low. Curtains drawn. TV and aircon off. No sudden noise. He makes the room smaller, softer, like he’s building a cocoon around him.
Water first - pressed into Jannik’s hand, not asked about. Something cold to ground him. Maybe he nudges him to sit, guides rather than directs. Keeps his voice even, quiet, there without being overwhelming.
If Jannik lets him, Darren sits close. Not crowding. Just a steady point of contact - knee against knee, or a hand resting warm and still at the back of his neck. Something anchoring. Something that says you’re here, I’ve got you, nothing else matters right now.
He doesn’t expect eye contact. Doesn’t expect words.
If Jannik goes non-verbal, Darren adapts without blinking. Simple choices, gentle prompts. “Water?” “Lie down?” Things Jannik can answer with a nod, or not at all.
And when it tips into full shutdown - when Jannik just… stops — Darren stays.
That’s his role. Not fixing. Not pulling him out.
Just staying until he comes back.
(Although, its Simone if its more meltdown. But that's rarer. He doesn't like Darren seeing that at all. He's too embarrassed about who he becomes in that scenario. But Simone?
Simone doesn’t soften the world the way Darren does - he contains it.
Where Darren is quiet gravity, Simone is structure.
If it tips into meltdown, Simone is the one who steps in fast, decisive. Doors shut. Space cleared. Anyone else? Gone. He doesn’t hesitate.
And Jannik lets him see it, even if he hates it after.
Simone doesn’t flinch at the sharp edges - the snapping, the pacing, the overwhelmed anger that has nowhere to go. He meets it head-on, steady, unyielding in that very Simone way.
Short instructions. Grounding, but firmer.
“Breathe.”
“Sit.”
“Look at me.”
Not harsh. Just… immovable. Like a wall Jannik can crash into without breaking anything important.
Simone pretends it wasn’t a big deal.
No pity. No lingering looks. No soft are you okay that might make Jannik spiral into embarrassment.
Which, somehow, is exactly what Jannik needs.)
