2012 Totally Teriffic Things (before New Years)
My computer is the oldest one in the office. I'm in the room that Dr. Corvese keeps his Optometry chair (which I occasionally play with(1)). My office is the only one without a window, I have 300+ light bulbs just chillin' in the corner, and my computer has Windows2000.
I love this old keyboard though (2). You know the one, it's just like the one on the old desktop you used to check your my space on in your parents living room. It's got these big ole' keys that are actually buttons, not touch pads, or those super quiet very sensitive laptop keyboards.
I love the sound they make. I love when I am typing something official, and I feel like a whizkid listening to how fast my fingers are moving (3). I love that each keystroke is deliberate. You must exert energy to make that letter appear.
I love being young and being taught by those who were forced to welcome the digital age AFTER their schooling was completed (4). I can speak the digital language. I was taught when my mind was still a sponge. They think I'm a genius and sometimes I want to tell them "I'm just 20. Look at the IT guys. They are fucking GENIUSES." But we just think it's weird that they all decided to wear plaid everyday (5).
I love the people that I work with. Who want to help people. Who are assertive advocates and patient listeners at the same time. (6)
I picked up the phone four times today and explained to people that the utilities assistance department would not open until an unnamed date later this month. Each time that person thanked me, just for listening to the hard times they were coming upon and quelling a bit of their anxiety. (7-10)
Today I felt like I hadn't done much, but I can count on two hands the number of people who asked for my name so as to thank me properly.
At Panera, that number would be quantifying how many people told me I had personally ruined their day for running out of bread bowls.
Sheepishly, I admit, I love that I still get to work there on weekends. (11)
More totally terrific things coming soon...
