4 YEARS {A FukuOda Drabble}

He loved his fingers. He loved how slender they looked, loved how graceful they felt as light digits touched along his jawline, or tangled into his hair so affectionately.

"I love you."

Fukumoto loved his voice. He loved how Odagiri called out good morning, and how he wished him goodnight. He loved how his lover would sometimes hum to himself, thinking no one was listening, but of course he was; Fukumoto was always listening, always watching the other's every movement, because he adored everything about him. But most of all, Fukumoto loved his 'I love you's. Such simple words could barely express enough, but it was alright, because he understood. He knew the emotions Odagiri tried to convey, because he felt them too, and strongly so.

Yet here he stood, attempting to voice something terrible he had wished to say for so long:

"Odagiri... I don't think we should see each other anymore."

Hurt was evident upon the other's visage, and the sight pierced Fukumoto's heart more than anything else. But he had to do this; he had promised himself to, without going back. No, he wouldn't; not anymore.

"Fukumoto... What do you mean..?" Confusion. He had expected that, really.

"It's like I said," the taller male continued coldly. "This is for the best."

( Please don't look at me like that... )

"I don't understand. Have you found someone else?"

"You know I wouldn't."

( Please don't make this so hard for me... )

 "Did I do something wrong..?"

"It's not like that..."

( Odagiri... Please... ) 

"I don't know what's bothering you, but isn't there a way to fix this? Didn't you promise we would figure things out, together, no matter the issue?"

"I came to realize there are things that cannot be fixed."

The military man grew quiet, gaze cast down on the wooden floor, his fists clenched. "...don't you love me anymore..?"

That hurt. It hurt so much Fukumoto's stoic mask broke as he pulled the other into an embrace, arms tightly wrapped around him so desperately.

"...I love you, Odagiri. I love you more than I can bear, but..." His grip slackened, voice lowering a few notches, "We can't keep holding onto things that were not meant to be..."

At this, Odagiri's expression slowly changed. He was smiling now, as if a heavy burden had been lifted off his weary shoulders.

"...I understand." Once again, Odagiri's fingertips ran along his face, gently caressing his skin. Fukumoto leaned into the touch. This is the right thing to do—he knew it was, then why were the tears pressing on?

"Farewell, Fukumoto... Please be happy. And also—" Closing the distance between them, Odagiri placed a kiss upon his cheek.

"...I'm sorry."

Once again, he was left alone; the other's  presence, vanished into thin air. At least no one could see him breaking down.

It had been five years since Odagiri left the agency, and about four since he appeared by Fukumoto's side, out of nowhere, spending each and everyday with him. It had been wonderful.

But four years is a long time to dream, for the dead as well as the living...

It was time for Fukumoto to wake up.

Fukumoto: Hey Odagiri, want to go outside?

Odagiri: Sorry, Fukumoto, I can't. I have some work to finish.

Fukumoto: What am I supposed to do then?

Odagiri: I don't know. What do you normally do while I'm gone?

Fukumoto: [in tears] Wait for you to get back.

Kaminaga: Showing that movie to Fukumoto was a bad idea. How many innocent cats has he lifted in the air because of The Lion King?

Odagiri: I'm five foot seven and let me tell you it's not just cats.

Fukumoto: I can’t believe I burned the food…

Odagiri: Would a glow stick make you feel better?

Fukumoto: Odagiri, what do bees make?

Odagiri: Honey?

Fukumoto: Yes, dear?

Odagiri: ...
