Story - summarized

The new school year is about to start at CENU. Vermillion is excited for the class on Color Theory. She already loves red and white, but she wants to learn more about different hues, layers, shadings, anything.

Once class starts, Teacher Ni explains what she is looking for out of this class. She also tells them that their final exam will be to design an outfit for the seniors’ graduation ceremony. Vermillion is excited and starts planning out ideas for the dress.

However, during midterms, she gets called into the teacher’s office. Teacher Ni tells her that she is supposed to be using clashing colors, bold colors, anything besides the two. Vermillion defends her work by explaining the layers and shading she used. The other teachers in the work area overhear their fight. Vermillion tells her professor that she is being too narrow-minded.

All the other teachers gasp. Teacher Ni is indignant, and she bans Vermillion from the rest of the class sessions. She also says that if Vermillion’s final project is just red and white, she will fail her.

Infuriated, Vermillion returns to her dorm room. Her roommate, Chi Xiaoyu, is working on a flash mob dance. They talk about the final and wonder what they’re going to do. Soon, they both hatch a plan.

On the night of graduation, everyone gathers in an outdoor space wearing their official graduation gowns. Vermillion and Xiaoyu wait among the crowd for the fireworks to start. When the colors light up the sky, Vermillion shouts that it’s time.

Half of the crowd had agreed to a “fashion mob,” where they all wore red and white outfits. Friends cheer and gossip about the others’ outfits, and they all agree to wear red and white to the dance that night.

Vermillion spots Teacher Ni watching the whole spectacle. She sighs, but she tells Vermillion she did a wonderful job.

But she still fails her. She laughs and explains over the phone that she did promise to fail Vermillion if she had only red and white on her final. However, she says that Vermillion should take the class again, “with no color restrictions.” Teacher Ni loved the final project and is willing to give her another chance.

-Vermillion is a reddish color.

-In Chinese, Vermillion Snow’s name is Yiyi Hongxue, which means “clothes of red and snow.” And her birth name was Honghua, meaning “red flower.”

-In the Index, once you rank up the Reflection to 3-Star, you learn that Vermillion is willing to include other colors as well in her designs “to make the red and white pop.” It’s why the Full Blossom suit has green leaves.
