Hella curious, what ways do the team fall apart after the concussion?
upon losing an (important) staple for the team, the core group in particular just… self-destructs.
D lashes out at coach thomas for something that coach thomas doesn’t even realize is an issue. he plays recklessly in his anger, takes penalties that he would have never taken before, because what kind of university coach shit-talks their own player behind their back in the team locker room? if thomas has a problem with logan, he should have been forthright about it. to D, complaining to joan after practice with the assumption that no one would overhear is a Cowardly Move, and until coach thomas recognizes this, D is done taking orders
remus follows suit, because he may not know what the hell is going on, but he’s furious and upset and always ready to make a scene. he doesn’t quite revert back to attacking his own teammates, but dirty hits and multi-game suspensions become A Thing again
virgil struggles in general because he lives with logan and has front-row seats to logan’s own self-destruction. however, he struggles on the ice as well since 1) his defensive partner has suddenly become so unpredictable and 2) he’s back to playing with a goaltender that can’t always make up for the mistakes that virgil makes. he eventually reaches a breaking point at a game later in the season – for a valid reason, to be fair – and when he lashes out, he ends up being suspended for the remainder of it (story pending)
roman falters as a team captain because of the sinking realization that he didn’t understand logan nearly as well as he thought that he did. after all, what kind of captain lets their own teammate suffer for this long? what kind of captain misses so many of the warning signs??? he’s also terrified that logan will not return, and tensions over this uncertainty mount until he ends up falling out pretty spectacularly with patton (and, to a smaller degree, virgil as well)
patton tries his best to remain optimistic, but the argument that he has with roman is kind of a tipping point. he can’t keep pretending that everything is okay when everything is crumbling like this. it isn’t going to fool anyone.
with the team leadership actively angry and/or upset with one another, the team is pretty much doomed. none of the line comps work anymore because someone is always unhappy with someone else on their own line. the atmosphere is always tense and uncomfortable, and the team plays like it. they’re crashing into each other on the ice. they’re tripping over each other’s skates.
emile and remy try their best to hold this team together, but emile is a Single defenseman in a team that’s careening towards failure, and remy is honestly so Stressed and Tired upon returning to his unwanted post of Starting Goaltender that he honestly doesn’t know if trying to fix any of this is worth the effort
they enter the tournament as the Third Best team in the league, but they don’t even make it past regionals.
