FULL REVIEW: Thanks to Them

I HAVE ALL OF THE THOUGHTS!

Hot damn, I don't know whether to go by topic or by chronological order.

Gonna go by topic. I don't think I have enough screencaps to go by chronological order

Luz: As someone else pointed out on tumblr, Luz's depression is very real. The guilt of helping Belos find The Collector and leaving Eda and King behind is still weighing on her. Granted, I do believe that she is enjoying her time with her friends and the actual date she probably had with Amity (off screen because FUCK YOU DISNEY. I'LL **** YOU. WU-TANG!), but every moment that she's alone with her thoughts is just thoughts of how she messed up. When Luz did her video diary entry I was starting to get upset because I knew that whatever Luz decided I wasn't gonna like. She has a bad habit of putting all the weight on her shoulders. I really hope she grows out of it because she's done it several times before in the show and I didn't like it then either. Luckily there was...

Camila: Probably my second favorite character in this episode. Man, she was great. Yes, it was cool to see Eda go from the lady who makes Luz run her errands to being the momma of Luz and King. But Camila had "world's best mom" before the episode started.

Like she started taking care of those kids, immediately. She did her research, bought books, asked questions. God bless Camila. And she also probably saved the episode for me because when Luz was gonna make her big terrible announcement that I knew I was gonna like, Camila made an interference play.

Interception! Gonna be honest, I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING. Camila going to the demon realm was not in my Thanks to Them Bingo card. This is why I don't make theories or predictions because I can't predict shit.

Camila was my second favorite character in this episode. My favorite character ended up being

Hunter: I've said this about other characters but not Hunter, but I guess I'll say it now.

"You're my boy, Hunter. YOU'RE MY BOY!"

Seriously, as someone who donates $20 a month to the Wolf Conservation Center, it was so cool to see a character who loves wolves as much as I do. But that wasn't the only thing. It was fun to see Hunter get into things and have fun. He's gotten better at sewing. He's engaging with his friends more. And turning into a sci-fi nerd was the beautiful icing on the big dumb cake. Even my brother, who didn't like Hunter, ended up liking Hunter after this episode. And then we got my favorite line in the episode.

That's just great. Something I wish I would have learned at his age.

Gus: I don't have much to say about Gus except that he was very funny in this episode. If anyone asks why I didn't like the friendship between Tom and Marco in Star vs the Forces of Evil, I'm gonna tell them it's because Gus and Hunter did it better. He was the second funniest character in this episode. The funniest character in my opinion was

Willow: Someone was having a good time. See her poking people with that trident and her muahaha and her not liking Hocus Pocus and she was was just awesome in this episode. It also looks like things are inching closer towards huntlow (or as the Owl crew jokes "Winter is coming"). She makes him blush a lot and I'm just remembering how she held him when Camila fished him out of the water and her "be careful with him." I didn't I'd like this ship when it started but I'm all for it now.

and I didn't forget

Amity: ^This here^ was the moment when I paused (I was watching on YouTube TV) and said "Look at this. Look how good this is. Who could ever see this and think that it's bad or wrong?" She loves her so much. Amity was great in this episode and her line "I was a top student once" reminded me of the time during grom when she bumped into Luz and snapped "Watch it, nitwit" before realizing it was her. Amity loves Luz but I think there still might be some bully still in there. Not that I mind. Amity is still Amity. And of course the ambitious Amity would be the one to suggest exploring the human realm. And I'm loving the hair getting longer.

Vee: Sweet Vee. I'm not the biggest fan of her new form. Honestly I kinda wanted it to be Luz with freckles but I'll get used to it.

Flapjack: Is Flapjack Evalyn or just the last bit of Evalyn left in the world? I guess we'll find out. Good night, sweet prince. Honestly I was so scared that Belos was going to absorb him the way he does other palismans. Remember when he was trembling behind that tombstone? Have you ever seen an animal be legit scared? It's like that and it's heartbreaking.

Belos: Belos was terrifying in this episode. I'm glad we got official backstory after putting the pieces together during Hollow Mind, but I still want a full flashback. I don't know if we have time for it (because of Disney. How dare you? Wu-Tang!). Maybe it's just me being selfish.

Even though I said I don't make theories, seeing the titan's blood with an owl cork did get me thinking. My theory is that Caleb didn't move to The Boiling Isles full time right away. My guess is that he and Evalyn were seeing each other, hopping back and forth between realms, before Caleb decided to settle down there. So I guess either Evalyn or Caleb left a stash of titan's blood for whenever one of them needed it.

And I do agree with everyone else that I do think Evalyn was a Clawthorne. I guess that makes Hunter a Clawthorne too in a weird way.

Misc Thoughts:

The Noceda set up is the same as mine! A Switch and a PS4. You think that's a PS5? Hell no. Who buys a game console for $600? You must be out of your damn mind.

Screw you, you old bitch. Luz is too good for your shit art class anyway. I bet the beastkeeping kids over at Hexside would have loved Luz's griffin taxidermy.

I don't know who those guys were that gave Luz the Haunted Hayride flyer, but I immediately didn't like them. They just gave off a bad vibe to me. I'm guessing they were supposed to be human supporting characters for season 3, but for the first time I'm glad time was cut. No thank you.

Kinda cruel to make Luz go to (human) school, but I get it.

I wish we could have had more fun, but I'm glad they crammed as much fun as they could.

The Cosmic Frontier stuff was hilarious. I thought it was Manny's (Luz's dad) thing but then I saw Camila freak out and then I was like "OMG *gasp* YOU were the nerd!"

Now we're going back to the demon realm and...I have no idea what's gonna happen next. I can't even guess. We don't know anything about The Collector so who knows what they've done to The Boiling Isles. I'm just as scared as you are.

So...yeah.

FULL REVIEWS: Escaping Expulsion

Here we are. The second episode and man have I been holding it in for a while. But since it aired on TV, I can talk about it all I want.

You know the drill. 5 point system and here

The episode starts at Blight Industries where we actually get to see Amity's parents, Alador and Odalia. It looks like they sell abominations and abomination accessories, I'll tell you what. But Thicc Mama Blight isn't a fan of Amity's new attitude (happy, I guess).

"My thick thighs can end lives too, Amity!"

When Odalia catches Amity staring at her grom picture, she starts to put two and two together.

To kick off the B-plot, Luz is teaching both Lilith and Eda about glyphs. It goes...exactly the way you think it would. Lilith is a star student and Eda just kinda does whatever she wants. We would get more but Luz has to go to school.

"Good thing my leg healed up in time for season two."

At school, Luz gets a warm welcome from her friends including Gus whose balls have dropped since the last week(?) we saw him. I guess he was right. Puberty is the craziest ride of them all. Amity gives Luz a fairy pie (NOT a dirty joke) with ingredients so fresh Gordon Ramsey is screaming, "They're moving that's how fucking raw they are," somewhere because they are still screaming. Jeez, Amity at least kill the little bastards first.

The kids are called into Bump's office where Amity's parents use their influence to have Luz, Gus and Amity expelled. When Luz tries to confront Odalia about it, Odalia implies that she's willing to make a deal. Willow knows better however and they try to get back into school on their own. When Gus and Willow are literally taken away, Luz tries to get Amity to take her to Odalia but Amity refuses. And after watching the whole episode, I figured out why.

Meanwhile in the B-plot, Lilith is really getting the hang of chaining glyphs while Eda is still stuck on trying to create combos. Eda tries to combine all the glyphs into one super glyph and it creates a ice spike shell thing that keeps growing(?). Like why? Why was ice the dominate glyph in this episode? Whatever.

Back with Luz, she meets with the Blights and makes a deal to get the crew back into Hexside. Luz takes Amity's place in the Blight Industries Showcase as the crash test dummy.

Amity quickly figures out what happened and gets the crew together to go rescue her. Things get from bad to worse when Odalia unleashes the Abomaton 2.0 and all I'm thinking about is this is why Amity refused to take Luz to Odalia. Amity knows what kind of person her mom is and knew that whatever "deal" Odalia made was just going to be a set up.

"Not my girlfriend, you bitch!"

Amity comes in for the dramatic rescue and strikes her own deal with Odalia. Amity is pretty good at abomination magic. Odalia could use her influence to reverse the expulsion or Amity could use her abomination knowledge to tear apart the abomaton in front of all the investors. Odalia agrees and Amity lets the abomaton get the win.

And yes, finally we got Luz blushing back at Amity. Now Luz is seeing Amity as her knight in black nail polish. No distractions, no excuses.

Odalia wants to go back on her word, but Alador reminds her that a Blight keeps their end of the deal.

Meanwhile back at the B-plot, Eda finally gives in and asks for help leading to my favorite moment that nobody talks about.

"Whoop."

HOW DO YOU GUYS NOT FIND THAT TO BE THE FUNNIEST FUCKING THING EVER? It's great.

Lilith helps Eda and explains that putting glyphs on top of each other is like putting words on top of each other. The glyph doesn't know what to do. BUT chaining glyphs together into different combinations can yield different results. Like a sequence of commands.

"Oh...my gosh."

Luz comes home and gives extra credit to her Owl mamas because she's had a hell of a day and just wants to clock out.

And then the episode actually ends with The Golden Guard showing up to tell the Blights that The Emperor will be buying ALL the abomatons and funding their research. The Blights are advised to take the offer, since Belos isn't the biggest fan of citizens creating their own private army.

FINAL SCORE: 5/5, LOVED IT.

The first episode was good. This episode was great. So many good little moments like Lilith calling Luz "teacher", Luz and Amity and the fairy pie, "Whoop", "I am your mother. Obey me and die," "Stay away from my Luz," "Oh...my gosh," all of it, just all of it.

Love having Lilith in The Owl House fam. I love that Luz is blushing back at Amity. Just love all of it.

FULL REVIEWS: Separate Tides

Wow. Season 2 is finally here. I'm excited and apprehensive but there's no stopping now. So I saw some of the spoilers last week and tried my damnedest to wait until the next Saturday and after watching everyone else react to it may I just say: Neat.

It's not that I don't have strong feelings or anything it's just that the episode is...well, you'll see.

Before I continue I just wanna say thanks to everyone who was following this blog. I hope that my art reblogs, jokes, and incorrect quotes helped keep you entertained until we finally got here.

Now let's get it on. But just in case you forgot:

The episode starts with a funny fake out the mirrors the first episode of season one. With all the dark promotional art and crazy trailers, sometimes you forget that this is still a Disney Channel show.

After the new opening, we cut to Luz recording a video for her mom basically recapping the important plot points of season one. The Owl House fam (now including Lilith) goes to the market and brings up something I actually didn't think about and something a lesser show would have never addressed. With the portal gone, Eda can't get new human junk to sell so now the fam has to find new ways to make money. Especially since you added a new border and the apprentice is a growing girl.

Unfortunately since the season one finale was such a big spectacle everyone in Bonesboro knows that Eda and Lilith can't do magic anymore. No one takes them seriously anymore. Eda can't stop people from scamming her and Lilith has been replaced by The Golden Guard. I'll get to him later.

And we quickly get to the main theme of this episode: guilt. Luz feels guilty for costing Eda her powers and Lilith feels guilty for cursing Eda in the first place. Luz decides that since the fam are bounty hunters this week to take the biggest bounty and Luz is off to the high seas.

Meanwhile in the B-plot, Lilith decides that the best way to make it up to Eda would to cook up a scrying potion so Eda can spy on the Emperor's Palace. Don't know why she would want that but she's your sister so go for it, I guess. Hooty, excited that there's a new housemate, wants to do everything he can to help Lilith and become the best of friends. Problem is he's Hooty.

Lilith tries to push Hooty away but when things get too tough Lilith humbles up and accepts that she needs help. Hooty helps Lilith get the last ingredient for potion and the two start a funny ass friendship that I didn't know I always wanted. Hoot.

Finishing up the A-plot, Luz quickly warms herself up to the ship's captain (Hi Steve Blum) and his crew. But just when they find the silkiedomus, the ship gets robbed by (who else) Eda. And that's when The Golden Guard shows himself.

He's...not my favorite. I don't know. I know a lot of people really like him but all I can think of is "Diet Deadpool." And that's because I usually love smart-ass characters. I don't see him as a badass or anything because I imagine it's not that difficult to take out two people who can't really do magic when you can. Whatever.

The Golden Guard forces Eda and Luz to kill the silkidomus, even though according to Eda the silkiedomus is a peaceful creature. Everyone else has been provoking it for some reason.

Eda confronts Luz about her guilt and assures her that she's glad to have her in her life. They trick The Golden Guard and the silkidomus rewards them with gris that they can sell at the night market for a lot of money. The episode ends with The Owl House fam ordering takeout with their newly found income and this...

FINAL SCORE: 4/5, Liked it.

The episode is...fine. A solid way to ease us into the season. Don't wanna give up the goat on the first episode. The Golden Guard was...fine.

I wanted to give this episode a three but the jokes and Eda's speech to Luz were too good. So it bumps up to a four.

Besides this episode looks like small potatoes when you compare it to the next one. Yeah, I already saw it but I won't get into it until Saturday. So much to talk about.

The cold open starts with story time from King, I guess. I’m sorry but opening and reading from a book is one of the oldest (Think the original Snow White and Pinocchio Disney movies) ways to start an animated anything. But we need to get some exposition out. It’s basically background on Emperor Belos. Proves what I said like three times already. The people of The Boiling Isles were basically stupid and believed whatever he said. It’s like when I bring The Ghost Who Never Lies to speak on my behalf but only I can see or hear him.

Where did that gust of wind come from? The window’s closed.

Doesn’t matter to Luz as she resolves to get Eda back.

This is uncomfortable.

Meanwhile in the B-plot, Lilith is eagerly waiting for Emperor Belos to heal Eda. He sort of does. He brings her mind back from the owl form. Turns out he doesn’t really care about her or Luz. He just wants the portal she came through. She refuses and gets taken away. 

And in the plot twist to end all plot twists, Belos says he won’t heal Eda. What? No. He looked like such a trustworthy guy. The evil looking guy is evil? I didn’t think leopards would eat my face said lady who voted for the face eating leopard party.

Kinda makes me roll my eyes that Lilith would believe him but whatever.

In the C-plot, Gus, Willow and Amity are watching the news and know that Luz is going to get herself into trouble but only Gus and Willow go because...Amity would have resolved the plot too quickly for a twenty-two minute runtime. I don’t know.

Geepers!

Luz and King get caught on purpose to fight their away into The Emperor’s palace. 

“You have a family. Go back to them.”

Luz and Eda meet and have a heart to heart. Eda reveals that The Emperor wants to portal and to destroy it when she gets home. They say their goodbyes before Eda is lifted up to the stage.

Luz attacks Lilith and they sorta fall into the human realm. There, Lilith explains everything.

Growing up, Eda and Lilith were the best of friends. Lilith dreamed of joining The Emperor’s Coven while Eda just wanted to be with her sister. With one spot left, they were set to duel it out. Lilith knew that Eda would beat her. She was younger but worked twice as hard.

Lilith went to the night market and found a spell that was supposed to negate Eda’s powers for a day, but the duel came Eda backed out. She had no interest in taking Lilith’s dream away from her. But as soon as she turned away

It always breaks my heart to see Eda’s expression here. She’s just a kid who has no idea what’s happening to her or why. She must have been so scared.

To prove she’s being sincere, Lilith gives Luz Owlbert and Eda’s staff. They go back to save Eda until The Emperor shows himself.

NOW Belos is intimidating to me. He moves so unnaturally and doesn’t need a circle to cast spells. He sends King and Lilith with Eda and tells Luz that he wants the portal to the human realm. He doesn’t want to conquer it (and who would want to. It’s a mess here.). He says the titan has bigger plans than that. In exchange, he’ll let Luz “rescue” Eda.

They fight but Luz relents and gives him the portal but not before she sets off the fire glyphs to destroy it.

Our heroes make their escape back to The Owl House. Luz wants to help Eda but Lilith only see one way. Lilith uses a spell to split the curse between the both of them. Eda can’t do magic anymore but at least she isn’t a giant owlbeast. 

Luz ends the night promising to herself and to her mom that she’ll find a way back home.

Meanwhile, Emperor Belos has lost interest in The Owl House fam as he’s got what he’s wanted. Still he sends some...person to keep an eye on them, just in case.

FINAL SCORE: 4 - Liked it.

My computer wouldn’t let me upload certain pictures so this review is small than the others. Still, this is a good finale. It answers a lot of the questions and sets up a lot for season two. I couldn’t write or joke too much about it since it has a lot more action than usual. It’s a good way to end the season, but a great way to set up for the next one.

FULL REVIEWS: “Enchanting Grom Fright”

The hype for this episode was unreal. We got the crew telling us that we weren’t ready on social media. It was a madhouse. To think that the little ship that could would have this big a leap in canon is unreal. Let’s just get to it.

The cold open starts with Luz trying to find more glyphs in her off time. I thinks it really shows her development so far. Now she’s willing to do the work to figure out her kind of magic, as oppose to say episode two where she just wanted to be great because she was “chosen.”

“My glyph skills are blossoming”

But then reality ensues...

Using the portal to let the wifi signal into The Owl House is not the dumbest reason I’ve heard to open an interdimensional portal between worlds but it is one of the most mundane. SOMEHOW, Luz can still receive texts from her mom FROM ANOTHER WORLD. Not that it makes too much of a difference since Luz barely answers them. 

As much fun as it is to focus on the magic and the shipping and the friendship and the curse, Luz still knows that she’s still lying to her mom. The guilt is there, but luckily being a main character keeps her too busy to think about it.

“Luz, time to fill that darling head of yours with...huuh huuh huuh HAKKK, mmm, mmm, mmh, delicious knowledge.”

It’s that time of year again that Luz doesn’t know about yet, Grom: The Boiling Isles’ weird version of prom. Every fantasy world has one. 

*hiss*

Amity bumps into Luz, and I know this is going to sound weird, but I really like Amity’s “Watch it, nitwit.” Amity’s character has changed and developed from our perspective which is the perspective of Luz and The Owl House fam. But she’s not a completely different character. Amity still has a bit of a temper and gets agitated easily. It makes sense to me and I’m glad I haven’t found anyone be like “Hey if Amity is nicer, why did she get mad when she bumped into someone?” 

Amity is nicer to Luz and co. because she’s gotten to know Luz and co. You don’t treat everyone in your life the same. Amity is one of those people that you need to defrost with first. Belief is backed up by experience and so are people’s personas. (Not that persona. I’m being serious here.) Because of Amity’s experiences, she’s believed that in order to survive she has to put people at arm’s length, then when she gets to know you, she’ll decide if she wants to let you in or not. So I guess that means that based on her interactions with Luz, Amity has decided...

You know what? I’ll save that for my Lumity meta.

The popular theory is that Amity was going to put her note in Luz’s locker, hence why she bumped into them. But actually seeing Luz and being announced as grom queen probably made her lose her nerve.

“Embrace your dreams...”

Amity is announced to be this year’s grom queen. Luz is happy for her before Amity runs in shock and embarrassment. Okay.

Luz discovers the gym’s weapons cache (not a thing I thought I would ever type) and Amity explains grom. Since Luz is from the human world and all that.

Grom is a monster that lives under the school and needs to be defeated every year so it doesn’t invade the town. It’s a classic shape-shifting fear monster. Odd are I have (and so have you) at least seen three or four of these in our lives already. Amity doesn’t want to show the entire school her greatest fear, especially since she already knows what it is. Luz suggest talking to Bump and Amity says she’ll try.

Another scene of Eda and King laughing and mocking Luz. Because I liked it so much the first time.

Eda gets dressed up herself because she’s volunteered to chaperone grom. Luz tells her that Amity is grom queen but wishes that she could take her place. We get...you know and Luz walks off. 

“I think we should kiss to ease the tension.”

Luz randomly meets up with Amity in the woods because I guess Amity had the same idea to take a walk to clear her head. Whatever. Amity tells Luz that Bump wasn’t going to change his mind unless Amity found a replacement. Luz volunteers because...she’s Luz, friend to all.

Except maybe that spider.

Top 10 Anime Betrayals

The Blight Siblings try to help Luz train against grom only for Eda to find out about their little plan. Here’s where we find out why Eda volunteered to chaperone a Hexside event even though she hates that place:

“What’s the fun in watching a kid get eaten by a monster if it’s my kid?”

That’s hilarious. To me. 

Luz and Amity have a moment before Luz’s debut and Amity thanks Luz for everything she’s done. They have more adorable banter before Luz takes the stage. 

“Wish me luck.”

“Luck.”

I’m guessing that’s not an expression in The Boiling Isles.

Luz faces Grom and it seems to be going better than everyone predicted until...you know

“Mija, this would be such a good shot for the trailer.”

Yup, we all predicted this. Luz’s greatest fear is her mom finding out that she’s been lying to her. Luz panics and takes off with Eda and Amity to chase after her.

Eda comes in for the save when Amity bursts in the scene saying “Boy let me tell you what.” She doesn’t really I just like saying that. You know, in my head. I mean, if you heard the way I was saying it out loud you’d probably think it was funny too but you know...text.

Grom gets a hold of Amity and transforms into her greatest fear. And we see why Amity didn’t want to face Grom in front of the whole school. She didn’t want everyone to see that Amity’s fear is very...emotional. Not physical. She’s not afraid of a giant spider or anything. It’s a little closer to the heart.

Amity clutching at her dress like a little kid is both the cutest and the saddest thing. This fear of hers is so bad it makes this fourteen year old feel like she’s four. I’m so sure she was about to cry right there. Or maybe that’s me. Could be both.

Luz picks up the note and discovers that Amity was trying to ask somebody out before she was announced as grom queen. Amity was afraid of being rejected. Luz tries to ease her fears by asking her out to grom. 

Trying seeing it from Luz’s point of view. She has no idea who Amity wants to ask out. Luz doesn’t even consider that it could be her because again, belief is backed by experience. Luz was considered a weirdo with no friends in the human world. She even said earlier in the episode that she got kicked out of her last school dance for dressing like an otter. Luz has no reason to believe that someone would like her romantically. She would like to. It is a fantasy of hers, but her experience tells her that other people don’t see her that way so she doesn’t consider that Amity wanted to ask Luz out.

I’ll save the rest for another blog post, although I did talk about this last year too.

But since Amity did want to ask Luz out and Luz asked her out instead, Amity’s fears are eased. Grom does what every fear monster does when their target overcomes their fears and says “Screw it, I’m just going to kick your ass!”

And then this happens:

As a Star vs the Forces of Evil fan, let me just say this is our Blood Moon Ball moment. The moment that the show tells the audience in John Oliver’s voice, “Yup this is the ship we’re doing so strap in folks.”

Luz and Amity work together to combine magic to take down Grom. It also helps that they eased each others’ fears. Luz can’t think about her mom if she’s focused on helping Amity. 

Luz and Amity defeat Grom in a blaze of glory. Luz being Luz, decides to ask Amity who she wanted to ask out just to see if she would tell you. Amity brushes it off.

“It doesn’t matter. After all, I already got to dance with the girl I like.”

Everyone celebrates but when Luz gets home she’s more tired than anything.

Maybe it was Grom, but Luz decides to give her mom a real answer. It’s been tough but it’s also been fun. There are good and bad days. Sometimes she feels like she doesn’t belong. But she has friends. They care about her, she cares about them, and that’s more than enough reason to stay. 

THEN THIS SHIT HAPPENS!

Yeah, the Meteora moment in Star vs the Forces of Evil. The moment where the show went “Never mind that shit. Here comes a complete change in the status quo.” 

Someone or something is sending Luz’s mom letters. It’s Luz’s handwriting, but it’s clearly not Luz since she can’t spell her name right. Season one already finished and we still have no idea what this is. 

I was all happy a second ago. Now I’m nervous as all hell. It’s a madhouse I tells ya. A madhouse!

FINAL SCORE: 5 - LOVED IT!

Wow. Just wow. This episode had everything. Jokes, plot, romance, character development, cameos, dancing, girls, MOM(?), crashing on your couch because technically I’m homeless.

I shipped Lumity before this, but this was the episode that told me that yes it was going to happen. We’re all in. 

But it’s not perfect.

Yeah, did any of you noticed that I didn’t even mention the B-plot? I’m going to be honest. The reason is...

I hate it.

I hate the B-plot so much that I skip it every time I watch this episode. I still don’t think Gus is that funny or interesting. Hell, Skara’s mini plot with her date and/or boyfriend was funnier.

But everything else about the episode more than outshines the B-plot so I still give it a five.

Next time we finish up the lumity trilogy next time.

FULL REVIEWS: “Understanding Willow”

Damn this episode was hyped up. Everyone was looking forward to this. Everyone wanted to know how this was going to go down. I did too and when we got it we were not disappointed. 

However it did prove why I don’t participate in fan theories because we’re all usually wrong all the time. So I say just shut up and be patient. But enough of why I’m not invited to discussions. Lets get it on!

We start the cold open with a Skara sighting! I still think her design is cute. She inviting her friends to her fifteenth birthday party. Neat. We see a bit of Amity’s dynamic with the two. Boscha is actively mean to Willow and Luz while the other two seem more neutral. 

“It’s fun because it’s stupid.” This was hilariously adorable. 

This was adorably hilarious.

Again we get another quick shot of how Boscha and her group pick on Willow. Skara doesn’t actively join but she does laugh at Willow which does suck. And we know Amity used to put down Willow too. My lumity loving heart is guessing that she’s stopped because of Luz’s influence but it’s just a guess. Still not cool that she doesn’t stop Boscha but that’s for another episode.

That must be an odd sensation.

We cut to photo memory class(?) and it’s big brain time again. What track would this be in? What purpose would this serve? Who would need to pull out memories with tweezers? If this process could permanently damage a person why would you let teenagers do it to other teenagers? It’s a madhouse I tells ya. A madhouse.

Anyway. 

So Willow was always a cutie.

Luz notices the Amity memory, but Willow asks her to drop it and leave it alone. Which she doesn’t do. It’s another character flaw of Luz that we’re going to see more of. She always has good intentions but she tends to overstep her bounds. It’s (to me) another form of being innocently insensitive, a common character flaw in characters like Luz.

Amity notices the memory too when she passes by the room. She wants to put their previous friendship behind them and does the reasonable thing of setting the memory on fire. Which sets all the memories on fire because of course it does. It’s fire! Dammit Amity, I thought you were the smart one. 

“I’ve connected the dots.” “You haven’t connected shit.” “I’ve connected them.”

We start the B-plot with Gus. Apparently after being kicked out of the Human Appreciation Society, he’s been looking for another club to join and is trying the school paper. He has to interview someone to get in but can’t decide on who.

Is it hot in here or am I just dying?

Willow starts freaking out and getting all sweaty and everyone (you included) figures out why immediately.

And there it is.

So Willow is going to to bye-bye for good unless they do something. So Luz takes everyone to the smartest person she knows because it’s clearly not Amity right now.

It’s a good thing you went to Eda and not a teacher or Willow’s parents.

So Eda explains that they can recover Willow’s mind before all the memories are permanently destroyed by physically sending someone in there to recover and repair the memories.

“Be still my fantasy loving heart!”

I agree with Luz. I love the journey to the center of the mind trope. But Eda believes in the buddy system so someone has to go with her and since we need Gus for the B-plot, it’s Amity.

Luz and Amity enter Willow’s mind and it takes a quick second to organize itself to a form that they can perceive because it’s the mind. That’s kind what it does. It likes to organize things to recognize patterns and because magic. 

Luz and Amity start fixing the memories. Apparently, Willow and Amity were really good friends when they were little and even Amity feels bad about almost getting rid of them. But there’s one memory that Amity doesn’t want Luz to see. 

Meanwhile in the B-plot, Gus is still trying to find someone to interview. Eda suggests herself because she’s Eda, and King demands attention. They don’t care about Gus’s whatever; they just like attention.

Back in Willow’s mind, Luz and Amity are going a good job repairing the memories but something is undoing all their work. We get a cute moment between Luz and Amity that I want to talk about more when I do my lumity analysis after I finish the reviews.

BTW, I’m going to do a lumity analysis.

They discover that the monster undoing all their work wasn’t actually that one fire Digimon whose name escapes me, but was actually the Inner Willow. The Inner Willow reveals that Willow actually resents Amity for ending their friendship and letting her new friends pick on her for years.

Now she has the opportunity to let out all her anger and hate like The Emperor’s dialogue in a STAR WARS movie. I know I’ve made that joke before but it still applies. 

Inner Willow plays back the memory of when Amity ended their friendship. We know they said that Amity did it because Willow was bad at magic but the acutal memory is a little off. Amity reveals why as well as the truth on why she really ended her friendship with Willow.

Amity’s parents never liked Willow because she wasn’t from an elite witch family. Of course Amity didn’t care. She was a little kid and kids don’t care about stuff like that. Amity’s parents say that she can have one of the friends that they picked out for her. (So Amity’s parents don’t even see Skara and Boscha as people either, huh?) Turns out they were brats even back then too. I guess Skara mellowed out over time. When Amity refuses, her parents promise that they’ll use their influence to make sure that Willow can’t get into Hexside.

This a threat but I always wondered why it was a threat. The best guesses are that Amity and Willow wouldn’t be able to see each other at all, Willow wanted to go to Hexside, Hexside is one of the better schools on The Boiling Isles, Hexside was the closest school to Willow’s house and going somewhere else would be too much of a pain in the ass. Whatever the case, the threat worked and Amity broke off their friendship in her birthday. Amity’s, not Willow’s. Pronouns.

Amity can’t undo the years of pain she’s put on Willow, but she can promise to make things better from now on. Amity apologizes and promises that she will try to stop Boscha and her gang from picking on her. Egg on her face, huh?

Hayden Christensen is going to show up next. I can feel it.

Luz and Amity repair the memories and leave Willow’s mind. In a very mature twist for a Disney show, Willow admits she can’t forgive Amity yet. There were literal years of pain between them. But it’s a start. And the episode ends with Gus interviewing Hooty and that goes exactly the way you think it would. Hoot.

FINAL SCORE: 5 - Loved it.

This episode was everything people wanted and more. The drama, the depth, the heart all came across strong here. Not a major turning point for the plot (because I know some people who dismiss every episode that isn’t about the main plot as filler. BTW fuck you guys), but this was a major turning point for the characters. Luz may be the main character of the show, but the main characters of the episode were Willow and Amity. 

If I had to find any faults it’s that I didn’t think the B-plot was that great. I don’t think Gus is very funny yet. Especially when you put him next to two comedic powerhouses like King and Eda. Other than that, this was a mind blowing episode. And it’s not even the first one!

FULL REVIEWS: “The First Day”

After Adventures in the Elements, I was all in on the lumity hype train. Granted I thought it was going to be like Little Witch Academia where they’ll do as could as they can without making it canon. I’m still afraid it’s going to be like Star vs The Forces of Evil where they make it canon in the last minute. I hope not. I’m so sick of that crap. 

There have been shows where the main couple gets together and they stay together as the story continues. Parks and Recreation, Kim Possible, Tangled the Series, etc.

But you guys didn’t come here for a rant. You came for a review. Luz starts her first day at Hexside and it didn’t go the way I thought it would. Egg on my face, huh?

The cold open actually starts with an animation error showing Luz in her multicolored uniform. Hello? Spoilers, guys. According to The Owl House wikia they’ve fixed it in reruns, but I don’t know if that’s true.

Turns out the fabled “placement exam” is just impressing Principal Bump.

Forced to use all your skills and knowledge to impress one person in order to live your life’s dream? Where have I heard that before? Oh right, the WWE. Fuck the WWE.

The placement exam goes...exactly the way I thought it would.

Exactly.

Principal Bump’s response is also...exactly the way I thought it would be.

Good for you, Luz.

So Luz begins her first semester at Hexside. Amity congratulates her (more on that later) before meeting up with Willow and Gus. Several funny jokes later and Luz meets with Principal Bump to work out her schedule. Luz wants to do a little bit of everything (Red Mage style) but, thanks to the coven system, the school districts have a “Hocus Focus” policy. Everyone has to specialize in one track only. 

This actually really scared me at the time because as a viewer it would be pretty lame to have nine tracks and only have us focus on one of them. The only other thing to do would be to keep switching characters based on which track we would want to focus on for that episode, but like typing that sentence, that seems like a lot of work for something simple. 

Luckily we get a funny shot at Harry Potter before Principal Bump employs his “eenie meenie minie this one” policy. I’m starting to think someone on the crew is really likes Harry Potter and some else in the show thinks Harry Potter is really stupid.

Okay so he’s dead. We know that, right?

Bump picks potions for Luz because get out of my office. An inspector from the Emperor’s Coven is going to show up and he hopes to impress them enough for a donation to cover the costs of the damages from the previous episodes. 

Luz tries to get into her potions class, but it’s not as exciting as the thought. And the idea of a potions coven also bothers me. Like if the coven system limits your magic does that mean people in the potions coven can’t do shit? It doesn’t take magic to mix shit together and stir. Hell we do that IRL. No magic required. 

I choose you to die.

It’s made even worse when Willow and some moon-headed girl have a POKEMON BATTLE right outside her window. It’s made even double worse we we get a glimpse of Luz’s class schedule.

 This drives Luz to try out that crystal ball she saw where she immediately gets caught by Principal Bump because magic I guess. Principal Bump becomes an odd number because he literally can’t even and ships Luz off to the detention track. That thing that educators do when a student needs extra attention but they don’t want to do the work.

The detention track seems terrible at first. The students aren’t allowed to do anything except wait until the day ends. But when the “teacher” falls asleep, one of the girls leads Luz to The Secret Room of Shortcuts. They use this secret network of magical back doors to peek into any and every class so they can learn whatever they want. Turns out Bump put them in the detention track for wanting to mix magics. 

And there’s the part I expect to get flack for. I don’t like the detention track kids. It’s not that they’re bad. I just think they’re kinda lame and boring. Viney could be cool but the rest seem like afterthoughts. They’re not funny or interesting and they’re not on screen enough to make me care about them. They kinda bring down the episode for me. For a show that has so many creative characters I was really surprised on how not invested I was. 

They get along well enough until Willow and Gus pull off the second laziest plot device in fiction: the misunderstanding. Yup, overhearing something without the proper context and taking it personally. It always works none of the time.

Meanwhile in the B (C?) plot, Bump is trying to use Amity to impress the inspector and it works too well. The inspector is actually a Greater Basilisk, a snake-like monster that eats magic from witches. 

That’s not a face you wanna see everyday.

Everyone tries to fight it off but it’s a snake-like monster that eats magic from witches. Luz’s magic doesn’t come from her; it comes from nature so the basilisk can’t eat that.

Luz rallies the detention track kids to fight off the Basilisk, and I got pissed because the dog’s palm reading thing did nothing and was completely useless.

Bump gets pissed at the kids for mixing magic but Luz confronts him about it. Luz does something that angers boomers and uses logic to prove her case. Bump realizes he was wrong and just lets the kids study multiple tracks and I’m thinking how does that work? If one track has a full day’s schedule how they going to do double the work? Or do they just do half the work?

Pokemon and Sailor Moon? Someone’s 90s anime is showing.

Luz still can’t decide on a track so Bump let’s her do all of them. Which begs the question even further, how is Luz’s schedule going to look like? Big brain hurt. Just tell yourself it’s just a show; I should really just relax.

Meanwhile in the C(?)-plot, King sneaks into the school to eat trash, leftovers, and free food. Somehow he ends up as a substitute teacher of a class proving my point that people are basically stupid and will believe anything you tell them.

FINAL SCORE: 4 - Liked it. 

I really wanted to give this episode a 3. I was just so not impressed by the detention track kids and I know that everyone else just loves them to pieces for the seven minutes maybe of screen time and the palm reading to defeat a Greater Basilisk. Whatever.

But I liked it because of the jokes, the jabs at Harry Potter and King’s C-plot was just funny enough to push it over that edge. And there’s also...you know....
