THE TOUGHEST POSE Move Into Your Least Favorite Posture With New Energy
Most of us have a least favorite posture. It is that posture that we may dread hearing called out in class and that encourages us to lose our Ujjayi breath and tighten our jaw muscles. For Liz, that posture is paschimottanasana, seated forward fold. For Kristen, it's urdhva dhanurasana, full wheel. In moving toward both postures, it is apparent that most of the discomfort is temporary and that the benefits of the practices are long lasting and immeasurable. By focusing on sending the breath to those areas of discomfort and anxiety, we are able to soften the burning in body and mind, finding deeper levels of awareness. Sometimes we may need to come out of the posture and try again. It is a practice. Our flexibility in approaching our least favorite postures will ultimately help us to find flexibility and strength in challenging day-to-day life scenarios. There is always an opportunity to look beyond the obvious or ordinary on our mats and in our lives. The reward in both is in the effort and being fully present.
