Hunger

Donny hadn’t realized how long it had been since he fed.

His hunger was thrown into stark relief when Julia arrived at his home, an apartment at the edge of town, far from others but near enough to feed. Julia, with her brightness and warmth, had come to visit. 

“Babe,” he said. “We have to do this another time.”

The last thing she was expecting was a marriage proposal. She had noticed his change in behavior and he was acting weird, but she thought it was best to just let him go.

The tears were sparkling in her eyes, he really wants to marry her. “Are you serious?” She never had thought she’d marry again. Until she and Donny pursued their relationship and suddenly she could see a new future.

He smiles up at her on his knees, the shiny ring held out to her. It was his mother’s, given to him for a special girl like Julia. She’s the girl he has to give this to, and while it took him quite awhile to perfect the speech, and way of proposing, he’s finally here. Their private anniversary dinner seems like the best time to him. 

‘ I’m serious. I don’t wanna be with any other girl. I wanna marry you, Julia. ’

An Investigation

“I’ll be out late tonight. Don’t wait up for me.”

Katherine stuck her phone in her pocket and pulled on her jacket. “You can go ahead and invite Donny over if you want. Tonight’s a perfect night for it.”

She grabbed her notebook and stuck it in her bag. “If you want me to grab takeout, text me. I can’t risk picking up your call.”

Donny quietly closed the door, careful not to upset the mug of tea in his hand as he softly made his way toward Julia. June was sound asleep in bed, but her condition was temperamental, and after the last close call, they had no choice but to keep a constant vigil.

He handed the mug to her and whispered, “You should get some sleep. I can watch her.”

She smirks at him. “What’s the problem Mr. Nova?” She asks with a raised eyebrow. “Are you ticklish?” She questions as she runs her finger over the same spot on the scar. She had never seen Donny squirm so much.

It was entertaining, she had no intention of stopping. She was thrilled he’d gotten some sleep, but she was bored and she had always wanted to touch the scar. Thankfully it didn’t hurt him anymore.

‘ N   No! ’ He claims through his laughter, squirming just enough to make her stop. He is comfortable in her arms otherwise. Besides the ticklish onslaught, Donny could consider this a good way to wake up. Perhaps, they could wake up this way every day.

She’s never been this sick before, or at least if she has been she can’t remember it. “You’re going to get sick if you stay here with me like this.” They don’t both need to have whatever this is. Rehearsals for the band have already been cancelled and they’ve already had to cancel a gig. She hates knowing that she’s the reason the band stops making progress.

“There is supposed to be a rehearsal tonight and because of me there isn’t.” She feels guilty and she absolutely despised this illness. She pulls the blanket around her more, trying to warm herself up.

‘ I’m pretty resistant. I think the last time I was ill was when I was a baby. ’ He chuckles, setting his head on her shoulder. He grabs her hand when she starts re wrap the blanket around her, knowing that she’ll soon over heat if stays in a bundle of blankets. 

‘ Jules, you’re already hot enough. And this cancellation isn’t you fault. The guys needed a break to relax. ’ He assures her, running his cool hands up and down her arms slowly.

“I wish you saw in yourself what I see in you.”

What did she see in him? A bruised and battered man worthy of pity? A villain who had hurt her deeply? Or maybe just as the temperamental musician, quick to anger when something didn’t go his way.

The worst was that she found something in him to admire. He was talented, but could she admire his talent when it came with so many caveats?

He swallowed hard. “That’s kind of you.”

She shakes her head. “Why not Donny? Us being together doesn’t mean that Michael matters less to us in any way.”

She knows that Donny feels guilty and that he believes Michael is standing in the way of this. But she believed that Michael would want them to be happy.

He shakes his head. She is right in one thing     Michael’s memory may end up out living the both of them. They talk about him so often, and find the things he left behind enough to keep the awkwardness of his sudden death alive. 

‘ I broke your heart when I killed Michael, Julia. ’ He starts, knowing that while she may not blame him for the incident, he does. ‘ I can’t just do that and then come in and keep your heart for myself. ’
