Time to Air your Grievances with Full Pint’s Festivus
It’s that time of year! You know the time… When you go up to the attic and pull out the ten foot high aluminum festivus pole to display proudly in your living room. The time where you gather those you love around you and tell them exactly what about them pisses you off. Happy holidays all. In celebration of this wonderful, December 23rd holiday, I am trying out Festivus, a “Holiday Ale” by the Full Pint brewers over in Pittsburgh. Here we go!
Appears deep, brown, was expecting an SRM in the high 30s, but held to light it is…breathtaking. It is radiant! A festivus miracle! The head retention is poor, this is only seconds after pouring it, and the lace is scant, but present. Also note the awesome label art with the feats of strength, airing of grievances, and the pole itself. Awesome work full pint.
The smell is delightful. Elements of espresso and light roasted coffee along with milk chocolate. The malt here brings out caramel, toffee, bready flavors, more than the roasted bitter that I discussed on the last review. Smooth vanilla also present, along with some spices, what seems to be cinnamon.
To call this a “winter warmer,” as they do on Beer Advocate, is correct but perhaps oversimplified. The taste is certainly full, strong, and definitely warming as the alcohol cuddles with your insides, but there is a lot going on. Opens on a pine, slightly chewy/nutty thickness but very sweet throughout, like candied yams. Nom nom. A clean progression and a persistent sweetness, the alcohol never makes itself apparent during the tasting, even holding it on/under your tongue and allowing it to warm does not reveal any alcohol harshness. What it does do is reveal a lot of spice and chocolate flavor that, coupled with the thick, chewy feel, make you feel like you are eating pie. Once it travels beyond your mouth, you feel the warmth, but before that, I assure you that you won’t sense the alcohol at all, which is pretty good for a 6%.
Mouthfeel I already mentioned a bit. Medium to medium high. It has a rather thick feel and a flavor of pecans throughout, further contributing to the pie motif they got goin on. Carbonation is low, but enough that it gives texture and avoids any oily feeling.
Overall- I have no grievances to air with this beer. I think it is solid all around. 9s and 10s are hard to come by, but for the holiday season, I would definitely sit by the fire and drink a bunch of this to avoid talking to people. Thanks full pint, looking forward to moving to Pittsburgh in the summer
