So what are your thoughts on the Spinosaurus - Tyrannosaurus swap scenario? I know you are probably busy with this blog and your other ones, but if you do have the time to respond, I thank you in advance. After all, Hell Creek and the Kem Kem Beds are not suitable to the large carnivores from the opposite habitats. Peace out.

You are entirely right, these theropods would have a very hard time surviving in the other’s environment.

Our thoughts would be to also consider weather and deseases. These animals wouldn’t be prepared to deal with illnesses of both a different continent, time, and climate. This last thing also plays a major role since heat and humidity was vastly different between the two environments.

We’d also note that Kem Kem beds thus far yield a pretty crazy diversity of theropods all competing for food, since the switched species would deal with a totally different niche, even Tyrannosaurus would have a hard time outcompeting all the animals already compeltely adapted to their environment, no matter how stronger its bite-force or sense are.

All in all we still think both species would not live long enough to see the next generation.

1 last thing of note on Spino/Rex swap: The Carcharodontosaurus population would also take a heavy blow as a consequence of the T. rex population: Not as a result of fighting, but because the T. rexes sense of smell would enable them to find carcasses faster than Carcharo can, and because the bone crushing bite of T. rex, by the time most Carcharodontosaurs would show up, most of the carcass would be eaten already, thus making it harder to find food. In any case, both species would be doomed.

As for T. rex in the Kem Kem Beds, it would be a different kind of struggle: T. rex would be able to hunt the native herbivores just fine, but with more competition for food from the likes of Carcharodontosaurus and Bahariasaurus (The former of whom is larger than T. rex), keeping a carcass for long would be a big challenge for the Tyrant Lizard King. In the end, the competition for food (and rexlings being vulnerable to the many unfamiliar predators) would ultimately do in the T. rex group.

I hope you don't mind if I can speculate on that other anon's Spino/rex swap scenario: How well would Spinosaurus do in Hell Creek. Logically speaking, it would not do well. With the large fish that Spino normally feeds on being absent in Hell Creek, chances are it would try to find food elsewhere. But with Thescelosaurus and Anatosaurus being too fast to catch and Triceratops and Ankylosaurus being too well armed to kill, it seems that the Spinosaurus population would starve to death. Sorry.
