Whatever happened to the 2.5” high heel?
A lament
That is all
I love gooooooold
This is a fascinating, much needed project. Thank you. After some reflection, I'm wondering if the allocation of mosque space in America is simply the product of cultural transfusion gone wrong. I've long thought about the role of the mosque here vs. its role in countries where the majority of the populace is Muslim. At least where I've lived, the functionality of mosques was utilitarian. Cultural norms dictated that men would drop in, quickly offer their prayers and return to work/home. There were very few places in Damascus with a space dedicated to women. And most folks seemed to be fine with this. Even the men's spaces were quite stark. That said, the functionality and ethos of the mosque is (and has to be) quite different here. Almost since its inception, it has functioned as a community center (akin, perhaps, to the YMCA in the Christian tradition). And yet, perhaps those in charge (and those dealing with the business of awqaaf) have yet to realize that the functionality of the mosque and the regulation of space needs to be completely different in order to meet the needs of the community. These are my very scattered thoughts. I'm certainly not endorsing the status quo, I'm simply trying to be charitable and think through the divisions of space. I know women who will step in front of the divider to pray. And I really appreciate the fact that, in Rockford, the congregants are ethnically diverse. The city is too small for the alternative. In any case, I think these discourses are important to the evolution of and harmony within the Muslim community--particularly as they pertain to gender relations. Thanks again!
