Hornsby to Sing Garcia
Former Grateful Dead pianist and current Noisemaker Bruce Horsnsby will play a Dead-centric set as part of his Funhouse Fest.
The performance, dubbed Bruce Sings Jerry, will feature the Staves and “other special guests” and is scheduled for June 24.
“For years I’ve been a proselytizer for the Grateful Dead as songwriters with one of the greatest bodies of work in ‘popular’ music history,“ Hornsby, who played with the Dead from 1990-‘92 and occasionally thereafter, said on Facebook.
“For years people have been asking me to make a record singing Garcia songs, so maybe this tribute set will be the first step down that road.”
That’s an exciting proposition, as Hornsby has been a top-notch Garcia interpreter for more than two decades both in his solo shows and as a member of Dead spinoffs The Other Ones and Fare Thee Well. “China Cat Sunflower,” “He’s Gone,” “Black Muddy River” and “Tennessee Jed” are among the Garcia-Robert Hunter songs Hornsby’s performed with some regularity over the years.
The Funhouse Fest is slated for June 23-25 in Williamsburg, Va., and will feature performances by Lake Street Dive, Rhiannon Giddens, Sheryl Crow and others.
