Do you have any tips for ppl using photoshop for the first time?

ooo it’s been a lonnng time so I will note what I remember!!! 

It’s a learning curve! Especially if the tablet doesn’t have a screen display. Take it easy, try out some funky brushes. Experimenting courageously can help you see what works & doesn’t work so you can use what you learned on your future pieces. 

Oh, very small detail; look up & make sure your tablet to screen mapping is 1:1 if your tablet does not have a screen. 

Remember to make a separate layer for the Line layer

My layers often look something like this with Lines & Color in groups and lots of clipping masks. I didn’t start that way & you don’t have to organize your stuff like this; it’s just how my process works now for lined things.

Oh also! Sometimes the sketch looks way better than your finished product, which is something I combat by intentionally making my sketch super simple and with none of the details drawn in so there’s no way to go but better from there x) If you find you’re better at planning a composition with traditional media, you could do part of the piece traditionally & scan or photograph it in to color. 

I often use hotkeys for increasing & decreasing brush size (I have them mapped to A & S but that’s not the default); I use the Alt+Space+click & drag to zoom in and out, Flip canvas horizontal, Duplicate (I often make a copy of a layer before I do a big change so I can go back to it if I don’t like the change). I arrange my hotkeys so I can access most of them with my left hand & live dangerously so my Ctrl + Q to duplicate normally closes the entire program on default photoshop. 

Check out process vids by artists you like to figure out how they do things!

AAAH YES figure skater Stiles and hockey player Derek!!! Ok but imagine Coach Finstock trains both Stiles and Dereks team. Stiles best friend Jackson is also a figure skater but not as serious as Stiles-who went to the Olympics and won GOLD!! And they train together. Derek's hockey team has to share the ice/or wait for them to finish training sometimes, & the team complains its not a real sport until Coach chews them out about how Stiles went to the Olympics and Derek stupidly falls for Stiles

Coach is really defensive about both sports and whenever the hockey team says that figure skating isn’t a sport, he makes them work through a routine. Almost always, the men break. 

Derek’s smart enough to never make such remarks (he holds figure skaters in high regard--especially Stiles) and often sits beside Stiles on the side of the rink and watch as the others fail.
