The other side of DS9

The other thing Deep Space Nine does very well is the “ridiculous” episodes.

Episodes that are - on the face of them - entirely pointless and silly. 

“The House of Quark” (the one I am watching now) is a very good example. The primary plot serves no real purpose in the grand scheme of things. In “Buffy, The Vampire Slayer” it would be called “A Monster of The Week” episode, because it is a standalone episode with no relation to the larger series. You can watch it on its own without a greater understanding of the larger series. 

Plus it is an episode where (spoiler alert!!) Quark becomes the head of a Klingon House - something that when you say it out loud really doesn’t make any logical sense (or even any sense at all).  And the part where he tries to explain the financial swindles to the entire Klingon Council is just.... the stuff that the best farces are made of.

It is something that Star Trek - TNG, DS9 and Voyager - does so very well. And something that (quite honestly) very few other series do anywhere near as well. 

The ridiculous episodes are so very good, and definitely worth watching.
