This week in Alaskan History: In 1935, the first Fur Rendezvous (now known as the Rondy) was held in Anchorage as a 3-Day festival, initially starting as a community dance. The festival was coordinated to coincide with coal miners coming to town.

The Fur Rendezvous was not held from 1942-1945 due to heavy focus on war efforts but deputed in 1946 with Championship Sled Dog Races. Today the festival stretches over a week and will be held 02/22/19 – 03/03/19. ...

AT&T Fireworks Extravaganza at Fur Rondy in Anchorage this Saturday!

To help celebrate nearly 20 years of support to the annual Fur Rendezvous as well as the 80th year of the festival itself, AT&T is inviting the community to enjoy a spectacular fireworks show over downtown Anchorage Saturday, Feb. 28, at 6:45 p.m. Greatly anticipated as one of the highlights of the festival, the AT&T Fireworks Extravaganza will be visible to revelers throughout much of downtown and beyond. Rondy Central at Third Avenue and E Street is a prime viewing location.

"I can not think of a more fitting gateway to the fun at Fur Rendezvous than the energy packed fireworks displays sponsored by our cornerstone partner AT&T,” said Rondy Board President Ruth Williams. “Their annual support is not only greatly appreciated by the festival but also by the community as demonstrated by their passion to endure all weather conditions to view the show."

“For 20 years, AT&T has enjoyed supporting Fur Rondy and our community,” said Shawn Uschmann, Director of Sales, AT&T Alaska. “And this year’s AT&T Fireworks Extravaganza will be sure to impress.
