Bug of the Day
Ok, so *THIS* is a white Furcula (Furcula borealis) - the one I posted a couple of weeks ago had the wrong id.
White furcula (Furcula borealis), Fishers Island NY. Caterpillar is from May 2015 (courtesy of colleague Doug Tallamy, who has a better macro than I do). Adult is from June 2017. Caterpillars have long, whip-like tubes at the end of their abdomen (modified prolegs) that will lash about in the air when startled. Although alarming when you first see it, the caterpillars are harmless. Caterpillars feed on cherries, poplars, and willows (we reared this one to pupa on black cherry).
Two generations in the Mid-Atlantic. Caterpillars in late spring and again in the fall. Adults appear by June. Furculas overwinter as pupa, hanging against twigs of their host plants.
Bug of the Day
I set up the moth sheet in the back woods last night, for the first time this season, and somehow came up with a species I have never seen before in my yard: Western Furcula, Furcula occidentalis. Very cool-looking species! (Thx to Ryan St Laurent for correcting my earlier id of F. cinerea)
Bug of the Day
It’s the always charming white Furcula (Furcula borealis). Pulled from archives (June 2019).
