Animal prints have become increasingly popular over the last decades. Around the mid 1900s it was seen as politically correct to wear real fur and animal prints as fashion statements. However this view as changed fortunately and only faux fur and printed animal patterns are seen as correct. Even though the legality of using endangered animals for fashion has changed, they still inspire fashion to this day. Why would these timeless prints last so long though? According to Love to Know from their article “Animal Prints,” the feeling that an animal print conveys transfers to the person wearing the print. For example cheetah prints are viewed as beautiful and confident so when applied to lingerie it conveys that alluring sense. Also tiger prints are viewed as powerful and strong which is often applied to common clothing items to create a sense of poised. Cat prints seem to be the most common of the prints to last through the decades. They began in the 1930s when Tarzan became popular on top pieces mainly. People wanted to convey a feeling of adventure like Tarzan and Jane. In the 1970s and 1980s prints became popular to wear on dresses and accessories because it conveyed a sense of a free and exotic spirit. However the use of print has concerned animal protection organizations that realize that not every print or fur is faux. Thus these organizations try to spread the word of the severity and the harsh treatment of animals for their fur. Also they try to make people aware that it is also an international law that it is illegal to trade endangered animals.
The use of animal fur has been controversial in the recent years. Thankfully celebrities and the government have encouraged the use of faux fur. All of this support against the use of real prints is a positive influence for society; however, celebrities have caused some negative influences. Since prints are such a fashion statement among stars, they are still common among stars’ outfits. Celebs are often photographed and published in multiple magazines wearing outfits that include animal prints or furs. Through these pictures celebrities’ fans can easily try to mirror their idols’ actions. Some of these fans use real fur to gain another level above the general population. What is even worse is that sometimes even celebrities use real animal fur. With depleting populations across the globe of multiple exotic, rare animals, celebrities should use their power to discourage the use of any animal print. The possibility of losing a species entirely for the sake of fashion is selfish. I realize that the hope of animal prints and furs being cut out completely is slim to none but at least it can be looked down upon. If animals must be apart of fashion maybe celebrities can just wear pictures of animals. They can wear certain animals that are not recognized enough to be preserved because if the lack of concern continues it could be detrimental. If the use of animal prints and real furs continues especially involving endangered animals then the only part of animals that will be a part of fashion will be the pictures of animals.
