Of Federal Shutdowns and Scheming Politicians

If you need some more salt for your wounds, both the President and members of Congress continue to get paid during a shutdown of the Federal Government. In fact, the U.S. Treasury Department can’t legally withhold these funds. Their salaries are considered mandatory spending.

Congress appears to be protected further by the 27th Amendment ratified in May 1992.

“No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of Representatives shall have intervened.”

Chatgpt says there is an interesting backstory to this amendment, first proposed by James Madison in 1798, and took nearly 200 years to be ratified. 

It doesn’t matter that workers placed on unpaid furlough or required to work unpaid will get their backpay. This is still a financial hardship on the workers and their families. Meanwhile, our Federal Government can continue to be at war with itself.

Our current president is a big orange dick or a small orange dick, if Stormy Daniels is to be trusted, but Congress has allowed this bullshit without effectively dealing with our current executive branch, Republicans and Democrats alike. Every one of them is to blame in their own way.  Shutdowns are going to happen from time to time. It is a function of the way our federal government allocates funds for their next fiscal period. Unfortunately, this fact is easily weaponized. Perhaps we should stop relying on the Federal government to do as much as they are doing?

Okay so, this started a small thing me and a few friends were doing bc we saw the need for it, and it's blowing up. Authors within our community are stepping up and graciously donating a free ebook in exchange for a food pantry donation.

Thousands of federal employees are furloughed right now, and millions are about to lose their SNAP benefits in November. The right laughs, calling these people lazy. But most of these people have a job, and need SNAP as additional funding so they and their children don't starve.
