furnishing with light
How to make a lighting plan: separate the function a lighting source has to fulfill. In a room you place general light, mood light and task /function light. To figure out where to place which lighting it is best to draw it in the floor plan / elevation. Circle the shape of the light, see how the space will be balanced with light. Above you see two pictures of before (1) and after (2) our adaptions.
It was a really good exercise to see / experience how light can influence a room, shape its character. We could try out a lot and we ended up implementing changes like choosing a less glaring, more functional light over the table, mood light in one corner, a task light for the painting, task lights over the kitchen cabinets. Furthermore we made it more relating to the Swiss housing market where there is only one place to install lighting in the ceiling (often in a rented kitchen).
All in all - it requires a lot of practice and experience to master a good light concept in a room, but it can have a huge impact on the whole quality of the space and finally on people’s everyday life.
