I don't know if this is something you could help me with, or if it's a silly question, but figured it couldn't hurt to ask with your work as a furrier. are there any dyes you would recommend for leaving the leather workable/not clumping up the fur, and if so, could any of them be done in patches that don't bleed through to other parts of the pelt? like how you can get rabbit pelts with leopard spots dyed on, but doing it yourself.
(I have a taxidermy project that's been sitting on the backburner for like four years because I don't have an airbrush and didn't want to ruin the hide accidentally, especially since I want to keep part of it white.)
SO sorry for the late response, sometimes my asks get buried!
i've dyed furs using hairdye and it does affect the leather a little-- I use E-Z Leather and stretch it back into shape but for taxidermy this may ruin the stretch you need.
if you're only doing spots or a small design hair dye should work okay! Here is a link to Nick DelCastillo's project where he dyed spots onto a cougar pelt using hairdye. definity isn't ideal but it seems like many people have had success with this method :-) i'd just recommend trying your best to avoid soaking the hide. you could probably try to dm nick to ask how he avoided dye bleeding !
