Why voice actor replacements in popular anime were successful (Miyu part)
There was a recent article about successful voice actor replacements and Miyu was mentioned there too:
In the case of anime where the original voice actor has been active for a long time, there is inevitably strong opposition to the change of voice actor. However, many second-generation voice actors have overcome the high hurdles and successfully won the approval of fans. Of course, there were a lot of trial and error too.
For example, Irino Miyu, who became the new voice of Sabo in "One Piece", delivers a very bold performance. Usually, when taking over the role of a popular character, the new voice actor would be conscious of the previous voice actor, but Irino Miyu's voice does not sound very similar to Furuya Toru's Sabo.
While Furuya's Sabo was a revolutionary army soldier with a deep, dignified voice, Irino's Sabo is refreshing. He has the image of a young man full of vitality, and even exudes a bit of sexiness. This is Irino's true talent, who is also known for dubbing Hollywood's most beautiful young actor, Timothée Chalamet.
However, there are aspects of his performance that faithfully express Sabo from the original work. That's probably why fans were able to accept this new Sabo so easily. Of course, that doesn't mean he's destroying the image of Sabo that Furuya created, but rather he seems to be paying respect to that performance while boldly incorporating the "Irino Miyu-ness."
Tbh, while I was overjoyed to see Miyu becoming part of such an iconic mainstream shounen anime, he certainly faced a huge challenge with taking this on as well, and I was a bit worried about a strong negative reaction (in a Kiracomp episode from 2016, Miyu said that it's scary and challenging to replace a voice actor that has shaped the image of a character for years... Who knew that almost eight years later, he would face such challenge as well in one of the biggest shows in Anime history). So I was very happy to see that the response to his voice acting was overwhelmingly positive. The day after his first appearance, articles documenting fans response and their praises appeared, and I was really relieved. I've only recently started to watch OP and never read the manga, so I didn't have the emotional investment into the show and Sabo's character like those who were following the show since the beginning and were used to Furuya-san's Sabo.
Somewhat related: recently, Kusao Takeshi-san was announced to replace Furuya-san for the role of Amuro Toru in Detective Conan and in last week's episode, we could finally hear his performance. And the response to Kusao-san's performance was very positive too. I have watched the episode and he emulated Furuya-san's vibe for the character perfectly, it was amazing! He did sound quite like Furuya-san, but a bit softer too. Perfect re-cast in both cases for characters that have a long history in the respective shows and are beloved by fans. But I'm mentioning this because, after the announcement for Detective Conan, people in X were making the connection between Kusao-san and Miyu by pointing out that they both played Coco and Natsu in Precure 5. Coco and Natsu were actually trending on X that day too.😆
I was deeply hurt when I learned about the series of reports about Toru Furuya yesterday afternoon. I still can't believe it, but as a fan of Japan I have no choice but to speak up about this horrible incident.
It is true that Furuya assaulted a woman much younger than him, impregnated her, and forced her to have an abortion, and this is unforgivable. What annoys me even more is the amusement of people who conflate his misdeeds with the idea that the character he played, Yamcha, was unfaithful.
Yamcha is suspected of cheating, but this is only hinted at by Trunks from the future and has never been confirmed. In the Dragon Ball Heroes anime, he shows great resentment towards men trying to hurt a girl, even if the man is much stronger than him.
Confusing this incident with a fictional character and mocking it is an act of trampling on the dignity of the character, the work, and most importantly, the real victim, and I despise those who post such things as jokes simply to draw attention to themselves.
