Happy International Women’s Day to all of the gorgeous, inspiring, amazing women in my life and all around the world. My own relationship to womanhood has always been complicated, but I’ve embraced it a bit more lately, partly because I am doing a project about women and it is empowering to be a strong female role model for my peers, students and audiences. (My pronouns are still they/them, though!) I regret that my illness today kept me from celebrating Women’s Day with my castmates at @ovate_company but I am so excited to bring this show to life for all of you. What I ultimately hope for is that women around the world can adopt our show into a piece that reflects their personal experiences - it would be such a joy to see a LGBT theatre pick it up and highlight queer and trans women’s stories, or a Black-owned theatre company talking about their stories, and the list goes on and on. ONE MONTH FROM NOW! I’m so excited to announce my next theatrical project - and it’s a big one! This work is an original work comprised of scenes from Aeschylus’ Oresteia, as well as poetry and language written by the actors themselves. It is about women - not just now, but in Ancient Greece, and at the dawn of humanity, from the steppes of Mongolia to the streets of DC. It is about their hurt, their rage, their love, and their forgiveness. It is a deeply moving and personal piece, and I have thrown so much of myself into it, as have all of the people involved. It will be unlike anything you’ve ever seen in an Ojai theatre, and we hope to start a trend of more devised theatre being created with social activism as the goal. We go up at the Ojai Women’s Center from March 10-19. I’ll be putting the link to tickets in my bio soon. I hope to see you there!
