This might be the solution I needed. Imagine that the top of the thigh was deepened and widened to more fully encompass the bottom of the thigh joint. Imagine a fine texture of crosshatching on the inside of the thigh cup an a lightly raised “pebble” texture on the bottom surface of the floating cup. All of that would be for stability, even the wider thigh top. See the “tooth” there? That fits perfectly in the slit in the peanut above it. I really think this is going to work.
Yeah, I’m still here. I am having trouble with the hips that won’t go away. I thought if I took comparison photos with the three above, I might get inspiration. Jenky Fusilli is jenky, but her thigh ball is rock-solid-functional. The Doll Family A on the right is functional and very aesthetically pleasing.
I am so far behind schedule, but I AM NOT GIVING UP! Say that I don’t finish her body; her head is ready to go. I will have her for sale at Resin Rose 2018, even if it is just the head with a selection of ears. Cat and bear are done-done, but I want to make either deer/sheep or humanoid elf ears to make a pack of three.
I did not forget that she needed broader shoulders.
I promised you hip joints and I have delivered hip joints.
Balance is way off, but it’s another big step.
See! I did work on her hips last weekend! I think I might make it a touch thicker, but I want to make her test thighs first. I don’t want to go crazy and she can’t wear anything but caftans.
There are also three sealed cans of Armory Black model primer in my living room. I know Armory doesn’t have the best rep for miniatures, but it’s my favorite for doll parts. It’s a filler and primer in one and it buffs up really smooth if you’re willing to give it effort.
There is the filled-out rib/under bust I mentioned yesterday. Also pictured, one (lightly modified) half-round joint blank, created by the peerless @batchixdolls and purchased via Shapeways. Now I need to decide if this is the right size and shape and, if so, shape her hip sockets to mate to it.
I have made a silicone mold for my modified Batchix joint blanks (note my swanky frozen pizza mold box). Now I can make a bunch in in any leftover garbage resin and experiment until I have a thigh peanut I like! Yay!
