Merlin couldn't believe this. After everything that they'd been through, he was going to lose Arwen. He held tightly onto her hand and realizing it was probably a little too tight, he loosened his grip to a more comfortable hold. Gaius had told him that he shouldn't bind his heart to hers, but wasn't his heart already bonded to Arwen's anyway? It wouldn't be any different.
He knew that if Arwen faded from him he would never be himself again. The thought of losing her alone had already sent too many tears slipping down his cheeks. He sniffed and wiped them away with his free hand. "I'm doing it," Merlin said, more to himself than to her. "I don't care what Gaius says, you're not supposed to die here. I tried to stop this from happen, but you're always so stubborn. You wouldn't have listened to me if I had told you what Mordred's destiny was." And now look at where they were. Arwen dying and Mordred dead. He'd known Arwen was taking him in, he'd worried she saw him as more a son than anything else. He'd hoped his resentment toward the boy would draw her away too, but it hadn't worked and now that prophecy was coming true. It wasn't supposed to be this way.
So he pulled Arwen carefully closer, not wanting to hurt her more than she had to already be hurting from the wound. "I'll save you, I promise," Merlin breathed toward her as he rested his forehead against hers. He had to part from her to perform this spell, so he held onto both of her hands this time instead. They would be connected and there would be no changing it and he couldn't regret it. His eyes glowed as he started chanting. Please work, he thought as the golden glow flowed toward Arwen. Please, please, please work.
