Jake sighed heavily, holding his head in his hands. His elbows rested on his knees as he sat on the bench in front of Marley’s dorm. The words came at him like a knife to the chest, and in the dead of night, the interaction seemed all the more dramatic.

“I never meant to, Marley. Never in a million years would I want to hurt you. Even before we became…us,” – the word sounded foreign on his tongue; he hadn’t used it to describe himself and Marley in what felt like eons – “You were always the most important person. I just…I know it’s best for us if we drop this. We are better as friends and friends alone.

“You knew I wasn’t perfect, but I tried to be for you,” Jake added after a pause that felt much too long. “You knew my flaws and you loved me anyway. But I really feel as though I’m not good enough for you, and I never will be. Your mom pretty much said so…not in so many words, but I know that’s how she feels. You deserve a prince, you know? I’m just some fraud. Some fool in prince’s clothing. I’m sorry for wasting your time like this.”

Marley swallowed nothing but air – the dreaded ‘F’ word. She knew Jake wanted her to say that they would always be friends, despite their attempts to be more than that. She could be a good sport and go along with it, but her gut told her to take a stand – for once, take a stand against Jake Puckerman and his very irrational, very flawed understanding of friendship.

“No,” she said suddenly, and the word sounded strange to her falling out of her mouth. “No, we won’t, Jake. We’ve tried to be more than that once before…and what happened? You ended up having another woman’s child.

“And if these past few months have taught me anything, it’s that I can never be just your friend,” Marley added, surprising even herself with how candid she was. “I will always feel something for you, but it isn’t friendship. Whether it’s love, or jealousy, or anger, or resentment … it’s never going to be something as easy as friendship. You should know that by now, Jake.”
