He knew missing posters of Luna wouldn't do much good.He knew who had her. It didn't matter if plastering them all over Diagon Alley and Knockturn Alley and Hogsmeade was a waste of energy. He needed to do something no matter how ineffective or illogical it was.His Luna was gone, taken, stolen. He wondered if his wife would be angry or disappointed or disgusted with him. He'd failed her--failed both of them--his wife and his daughter. He was lost. He scanned his surroundings and clutched the stack of papers to his chest. No, he was definitely, physically, lost. He bumped into someone and his papers fluttered to the ground. He attempted to gather them up and spared a glance upward. "Pettigrew?"

His expression cleared. He stood and a smile sprang onto his face.It didn't matter if Pettigrew was supposedly wanted for something. This probably wasn't him, but if it was him then it would be rude not to say hello. "How have you been?"If it was his mind simply trying to calm and focus him by giving him someone to talk to, he'd take it as a gift. He shook Peter's hand. "It's been much too long."

Method to Madness (Get Me Drabble @askjessiewilder)

Xeno apparated just outside of the line of spell firing range and crouched next to a fellow Order member, Clarence Jordan.Jordan frowned. He took in what Xeno was wearing,"Suit of armor? Really, Lovegood?"

Xeno grinned, "There is a method to my madness. And thought--"

"I don't doubt that.You can explain later.Thanks for coming,"said Jordan peeking over the low stone wall they crouched behind.He ducked to avoid a zing of a curse shot his way.

Xeno nodded,"No trouble at all.I'm surprised all of you didn't owl sooner..."

"We didn't expect this many. The Prewett brothers are over there, Shacklebolt is somewhere in all of this. Jessie and Wilcox are pinned down in the garden shed,"said Jordan. He gestured towards a shed where a couple of cloaked figures were directing their fire. "Prewetts and Shacklebolt are gonna distract most of them, then I'll go in and try to clear a path so you can get to those two.Ready?"

Xeno pulled down the visor of his helmet and it clanked closed,"Lead the way..."

Jordan smirked before hopping over the stone wall and countering two curses flung his way. Xeno stood on top of the stone wall and growled loudly. One of the cloaked figures paused to stare and Jordan hit him with a stunner.Xeno grinned from under his visor and jumped down from the wall. He swerved to the left to avoid a spell and and shot off a few of his own.

Jordan despatched another Death Eater.Xeno followed closely behind him. One Death Eater caught a glimpse of Xeno's shiny suit. She started to laugh.Xeno quickly cut it off with a well aimed curse. They flattened themselves against a wall to wait for an opening.Jordan turned his head and grinned,"I think I'm beginning to see the method to your madness..."

"Theatrically was a powerful element in striking fear into the hearts of ancient Samurai's enemies. The goal was intimidation,but apparently I'm not very good at it."

"Desired results,but not in the way you intended?"

"I take what I can get,"said Xeno. "Yes."

"How many left near the shed?"

Xeno inched towards the corner and poked his head around it. A spell flew in and his visor took the brunt of the hit. He fell backward. Jordan pulled him back behind the safety of the wall.Xeno pressed his back against the wall again, hands frantically moving to remove his helmet. He seized it,pulled it off and dropped it on the ground.

"You alright, Lovegood?"

"Yeah, it was...it was just...hot,"said Xeno trying to catch his breath."Three."

"What?"

"Left near the shed,"said Xeno. He picked up his helmet and examined it. The visor was melted shut. "I think I can even the odds. Distract them for me?"

"Ravenclaws, always making plans,"said Jordan. He ran around the corner spells blazing left and right.Xeno cautiously poked his head around the corner and noted the locations of the three Death Eaters. He apparated behind one and jammed his helmet onto her head. He pushed her into one of the remaining two giving Jordan the opening to stun them. The last Death Eater focused on the shed flung a curse that bounced off Xeno's armor. Xeno countered, but the Death Eater side-stepped. Jessie opened the door of the shed and stunned him from behind. "Xeno..." She wrapped her arms around him, but pulled back.

"It's a little hard to hug you with the armor, love..."

"You can take it off when we get home..."

Jessie-Mourn Me

The Lovegoods had flourished during The Enlightenment. The era's concepts of pursuing knowledge, encouraging curiosity, opposing intolerance, and questioning abuses by authority were passed down as ideals for generations within their family.

Xenophilius Lovegood was no exception.Thaleia's death allowed him to accept and appreciate the smaller things in life.It opened his mind to pursuing more deeply the hidden connections between all things in the world. He searched for the answer to the question of "Why her?" He didn't find an answer, but he did gain something. Life was too unpredictable, too fleeting, to simply do what was expected without thought or to care about what others said about him.

Thaleia's death cracked his shell. Jessie's death shattered it. And Xeno knew he would never be quite the same. He knew he was broken. He'd lost her, but he wouldn't, couldn't, let Luna lose him, too.

And if he was broken, he would give her the best pieces of him. and teach her about her mother's courage and help nurture her own strengths. He was unable to protect her from grief and loss. His Luna would be better.He'd make sure of that.

He'd protect her. He'd prepare her. Life would inevitably test her, but she would stay strong where he'd allowed himself to break.

"They took my Luna because of what I've been writing. They took my Luna and I don't know where she is, what they've done to her. But they might give her back to me if I -- If I... I must save Luna. I cannot lose Luna. You must not leave."

Death was not an enemy. It was neither good nor bad. It was the unavoidable end and beginning of all life. What was scary was not knowing. What hurt was the absence of what ought to be.

And when he forgot, when he slipped, when he set a third plate, or asked Luna to call her mother down from her work--he never pretended he was alright when Luna corrected him. They both knew better. He would not hide his sadness as if it were some mark of shame to feel and love the woman they had lost. He never pushed Luna away. And he would never knowingly lie to her.

Xeno didn't let Luna enter the spare room until he cleaned it up and restored what he could.The roof was rebuilt with a skylight. And at night they could see the dance of the universe swirling beyond them without having to venture out into the cold.Together they would remember and heal.

Their home seemed a little emptier when Luna left for Hogwarts, even with the printing press spitting out copies of The Quibbler. Sometimes, he would talk to Jessie. Xeno knew she wasn't haunting the house. He didn't expect her to answer...most of the time.But speaking to her eased the loneliness. Occasionally, an unexpected visitor for The Quibbler caught him at it before they rapped on the door.

Sometimes they asked to whom he had been speaking. Xeno chuckled and,depending on his mood, answered"I was talking to myself" or "My wife." At this point, there was usually an odd look. The visitor would pause. They would ask why he was talking to himself or--if they knew--try to delicately point out his wife was dead. Xeno grinned wider and said,"It helps me think" or "Yes, I know" before brushing pass the moment and asking what he could do for them.

There was one thing he never talked to Jessie about--saying good-bye. He hadn't had the chance. This fact urged him to continue the research he had abandoned years ago.The story of the Deathly Hallows--particularly the resurrection stone--had intrigued him since he was 12. He knew it's limitations. If it was real, it would never be able to bring her back. He didn't wish to waste away like the brother in the story. No. All he wanted was one moment. One last, proper moment to say good-bye.

What Xeno Remembers...

Summary: What Xenophilius Lovegood remembers of the night he lost his wife.

Years later, Xeno couldn't remember what made him leave his desk. He didn't remember if he heard sounds or smelled burning or if he ran or if he walked with hesitation and dread.He wouldn't even remember what he had been working on. The memory of that awful night began with him rooted to the spot in horror his eyes fixed and staring.

He cracked like an egg all reason all logic all sense calm warmth drained away gone

obliterated, broke--

replaced by chaos and questions and reeling rage and desperate reaching and an insatiable craving to try filling the void and keep the fragile,brittle shell of what was left of him from floating away on the next wind out of the gaping hole in the roof to battle the gods,claw out of the deepest black hole's gravitational pull, to sacrifice his very being, to do anything to restore her essence and bring her

home.

He sank to his knees beside her and moved a strand of hair away from her face.Xeno softly kissed her lips as if they were in a fairytale. He drew away, but she didn't stir.He brushed his hand against her cheek.He spied Luna out of the corner of his eye.He stood, turned towards her, and scooped her up in his arms. "Come away oh human child, to the waters and the wild..."

The room seemed suffocating to him even with the view of the stars. He carried Luna outside and walked to the nearby stream. The smell of smoke and the tang of broken magic faded away in the cool air. He sat Luna near the stream before plopping himself next to her. He kissed the top of her head. "Wait for me, my Luna. Don't go in the stream. Perhaps later we can camp under the stars..."

It seemed less real here. It was possible it had been a bad dream. He had fallen asleep at his desk. Why not? Still, he wasn't about to let Luna--whether it be a version of her in a nightmare his subconscious had conjured or not--sit out here in the cold without a jacket. He walked back to the house to fetch one for her. He retrieved one from the closet. He paused in the living room.If this was his dream and he was aware it was a dream then he controlled what happened. Yes. He'd tell his wife about his idea to camp under the stars with Luna. And Jessie would scold him for not having made sure their Luna had a jacket before going outside. Yes.

He never made it to the spare room's door. The burnt smell made him feel sick and he could feel himself starting to crumble.He sprinted out of the house and tried to smile when he helped Luna with her jacket. "Remember what I said?" Luna nodded. He kissed the top of her head again. He turned away and closed his eyes and tried to focus.

He apparated onto Millie's doorstep and knocked on the door. She opened the door. Xeno threw his arms around her.He wrapped his arms tighter around Millie. No,no.The crack was spreading, splintering, trying to make him fall apart, crackle him into pieces of eggshell. The wind was going to take him away. And part of him wanted it to...wanted it to bring him to where ever she was, but now, he was breaking. He didn't think he had the strength to wage war to return the both of them to this weeping world. And he realized how pathetic this thought was--he couldn't even fight for the one woman who loved and understood him completely.The only possible way he could redeem himself from his shame was to stay for their child. He clung tighter to Millie. Don't let me float away, don't let me, don't let me, Luna needs me. Don't let me float away. Don't let me. Don't let me.Do not. Don't. Please...

He felt the jarring pull of apparation and Millie tore away from him. He sank to the ground, digging his nails into the grass and the earth trying to hold on. He realized he was crying and he pressed his forehead into the grass, and squeezed his eyes shut.A light finger tapped him on the shoulder and he raised his head. Luna.He curled his arms around her and held her.He didn't know how long. It may have been hours. It may have been a moment.

And that was the last section of memory Xeno had of that night.
