Jessie had woken up early as usual to dance at sunrise, an odd but familiar routine to her. After doing her warmup for the day in the backyard, she came inside and started cooking scrambled eggs and bacon, stuffing them inside a croissant. She hummed contentedly as she cooked.
Xeno seemed to arrive on cue, lured by the scent. “Morning.” He said, causing Jessie to jump slightly and him to smile. “Sor-I mean…” he caught himself in the midst of doing exactly what Jessie had told him not to do-apologise. “S'fine. Here’s breakfast.” Jessie returned, setting the plate on the table along with a pitcher of orange juice she had found in the fridge.
The two munched in silence for a bit, eating hungrily. Then as they finished eating, Jessie broke the calm silence. (It seemed as if she was the only one to do that.) “Xeno?”
“Yes?” He replied, anticipating what was about to come. His mind was still reeling from last night, he hadn’t fully sorted out his thoughts yet.
“I..I don’t want to make this long, and I ramble a lot when I’m nervous, so you’ll need to stop me when I’m getting off track,” Xeno smiled a bit at this. It was just another trait of hers you had to learn to love. “Because, well, I’ve been thinking, since last night. And I think that it would be good for us, if that just for a while, maybe we could just be friends?” She asked, biting her lip as another anxious habit.
Xeno nodded, slowly at first as if he was still trying to process her words. Then it seemed to click. “Ah! Friends. Yes, I’d like that.” He said, nodding more confidently. It would have to do for now, he decided. It’d let both of them figure out their feelings for each other (when honestly, they were plain and clear).
“Really?” Jessie asked, grinning. Then she shook her head. “I mean, good. Awesome. Friends.” She smiled, glad she got that out. It was a lot easier than she thought. Glancing up at a clock, Jessie instantly stood. “Shit! Sorry, Xeno, but you’re going to have to leave…I’ve got to be at the academy in 10 minutes.” She told him, taking both their plates and setting them on the counter.
“Right. Sorry.” Xeno couldn’t help the word from slipping out. Friends could hug, right? He wondered, but his Ravenclaw sense fought the urge to reach out and hug her. “I’ve got to go back and work on the Quibbler anyway.”
“Bye, Xeno. You can just apparate out of here when you’re ready.” Jessie said, closing her eyes as if she were about to leave. Then she suddenly opened her eyes and turned to him, wrapping her arms around his torso and hugging him quickly. Then she stepped away. “Bye. Good luck.” She said with a smile, then vanished with a pop.
Before disapparating himself, Xeno grinned. She was still wearing his jacket.
