I can't believe that all this time Crystal Tokyo was a dystopian society

I’ve had my “bad Crystal Tokyo” headcanon forever, so its not a NEW idea for me. I don’t now that I ever went so far as to say it was dystopian, but pretty much my entire “how R works” headcanon is centered around the idea of the Senshi going back “fixing” the timeline. You can read it here on the backup, if you haven’t before, so this makes some modicum of sense.

I don’t know how much of an extreme I personally feel Crystal Tokyo is, though. I absolutely don’t believe in a utopia, so I know it’s not that, but I think it’s a society that tries very hard and strives to become the unattainable. But I think a lot of it is perspective, too, and that one person’s utopia is another’s prison.

I’ve had a lot of messages and alerts flying tonight so I’ve caught a glimpse of where my sticking point may have been a translation error. I wanted to get my summary written from the perspective of what I read and thought so I haven’t seen those messages yet. It’d be nice if it wasn’t as bad as it seemed to me.

But I do know I’m not going to be on-board Takeuchi’s view, regardless. I’m positive she DOES want the idea of a peaceful harmonious perfect world under Neo-Queen Serenity, and like I said up top, I reject the concept entirely. So I’m going to take issue with whatever Endymion’s trying to sell, I think it’ll just be a question of how implicit were they in the Black Moon’s actions.

And now I can't remember what the reason for the black moon clan was in the anime! They hated peace and wanted to own all the cake shops?

Hello, Jet! I hope your day is lovely and your puppy is, too (but isn't she always?). I tried looking for a particular post of yours, but couldn't find it. It was about how Minako is totally prepared for explaining the sudden death of one of the girls to their family and how the girls would react to this information. (This is a Crystal related ask and I apologize in advance for making you answer this) Jet when exactly dud things in Crystal start going downhill for you?

An eight month old Ask about Crystal? IT’S ONE AM AND I’M SO TIRED I’M MAKING POOR DECISIONS, SO WHY NOT

I first began to feel a bit rocky about Crystal when we finally, after so long, saw character designs. I was very concerned about the lack of any emotion or depth of actual character in them. But I knew static images didn’t make an animated product (RATHER AN IRONIC THOUGHT IN RETROSPECT), so I remained generally optimistic.

Then there was the leak of the opening and the first four minutes, which I talked about in this post (on the backup). Still the same reservations, but I felt great about Moon Pride (and still do!), so again, I kept my spirits up.

Then the actual show began to air. Really, you’d be best seeing for yourself, as I think my mounting disappointment with the show is pretty well documented. Here are the liveblog links for Episode One, Two, and Three. PLEASE ENJOY HOW VERY HARD I WAS TRYING.

But I think I’d say it was Episode Four where ... well, I can’t say Crystal’s quality declined, because it was pretty consistent with what had gone before. It’s where I started to give up, I suppose. That they kept in Mamoru kissing Usagi when she was unconscious was a major strike against Crystal for me and my confidence that they were going to adjust things in the series in a positive way. I think though my actual moment of encapsulated frustration was the scene with Ami and Rei in the arcade. IT SEEMS IT SHOULDN’T BE DOESN’T IT. I found my summary post on Episode Four though, and you can hear how very done I am.

And how done I already WAS. I was obviously struggling well before Episode Four, which was earlier than I remembered. The episode liveblogs really will be your best bet then, I think, for pinpointing where.

Also of help may be my “#jet wolf versus crystal” tag, which I began using at Mako’s episode. Mako’s episode was a real watershed for me with Crystal, and while I still held out some tiny glimmer of hope for Minako’s episode, and then STILL didn’t completely give up until THAT EPISODE YOU KNOW THE ONE, Mako’s was where I basically knew Crystal wasn’t ever going to meet even my barest minimal needs.

THUS I REMAIN HAPPILY DIVORCED FROM CRYSTAL. Please nobody take this post as an invitation to encourage me to try again. I’m not interested. My bitterness is slowly fading, but my life is an infinitely better place without Crystal in it.

I was re-reading Harry Potter today, which got me thinking about boggarts. And then my mind drifted to Sailor Moon (as it often does) and I started wondering what each of the senshi's greatest/worst fears are. I was wondering if you, with your wonderful sense of characterization and knowledge of them had any thoughts on the matter? What do you think they are each most afraid of?
