My favourite DJs and hailing from Sub Club Glasgow, Scotland where I lived for 7 years (yes it's kak cold there) have been one of my main inspirations and influences for the music I produce and play out today. Being one of the longest running resident DJ duos in the world, who better to get inspiration from?

James Blake

I've been listening to a lot of his music lately, love his voice and the different textures in his music. The instrumentation he uses are a mixture of classic piano and old analogue keyboards which I'm a big geek for these days.

Cottam

One DJ that has an amazing ear and out of the world track selection. I've

not seen a DJ play in and out of house and techno whilst still maintaining a BPM under 120 like he does, great guy too.

Sega Bodega

A young artist from Glasgow whom I had the pleasure of teaching the basics in Ableton Live for his Live show. His sound is like nothing I've heard before, very theatrical, great drum sequencing and melodies you'd hear in a film score.

Fatima & the Eglo Band

Listening to her perform Live in the Sub Club playing what I could only describe as "sex" music at 1am in the morning was quit refreshing to the usual 4/4 that takes place week in week out.

Esa will be performing with Auntie Flo at at the Future Music Series at the Alex Theatre in Joburg, Friday 20th September. Auntie Flo and Esa will also be at the Assembly in Cape Town, Saturday 21st September. More details about the show here.

Mma Tseleng,kicked off the show with a set that included some kwaito classics by Trompies, Alaska and Boom Shaka to name a few. This self proclaimed “kwaito scholar's” set got the crowd grooving to nostalgic sounds that remain part of a very important South African youth culture.

Popularly known for their podcast Highlife Radio, Auntie Flo and Esa's performance was an exciting blend of global music and dope live percussions. Having both worked on a range of interesting music based projects this collective played a memorable set.

Kwaito veteran Senyaka got the crowd jamming to some of his classics including the hit singles “Chisa Mpama” and “Fong Kong”, taking us down memory lane with a montage of his video's playing in the background.

London based 2Bears,the last performance of the evening were worth the wait. Fresh from collaborating with a few local musicians earlier that week they performed with a pantsula  dance collective who had some serious moves. The duo played many familiar tracks including their own remixes of Santi Gold's “Disperate Youth” and Nneka's “Shining Star”.

2Bears, Aunty Flo and Esa performed the next day at the Future Music series in Cape Town with local DJ's Tommy Gun, Miss CJ, DJ Fosta and Ego.The Future Music Series are presented by Live SA in association with Connect ZA and SshadoworksS and continue to breathe new life into the local live music scene.

Future / Music / Live

The Live Future Music Series was launched last Friday in Johannesburg at the Alex Theatre and the next day in Cape Town at the Assembly. DJ Danger got the show started by mixing some dope tunes while throwing some Shangaan Electro in the mix. The BLK JKS got people jamming and raising their fists while singing along to the sounds of Mzabalazo.  By the time Actress got on to the stage to play his set, hundreds of people were rocking out in the crowd.  The UK DJ and producer , was recently described by Thom Yorke of Radiohead as his “latest obsession” and listening to his set  that night it wasn’t hard to understand why.  

 The Future Music Series is a series of live shows brought to you by ConnectZA in association with LiveMagSA and  sShadoworkSs . The series will see a range of musicians from the UK and South Africa performing live over the next several months in Joburg and Cape Town.  The next show will take place on the 16th August 2013.
