Cherry blossoms, now? Yes. Some cherry blossoms bloom in spring and autumn. The cherry blossoms in this photo are Jugatsuzakura (十月桜) named October Cherry Tree after the month they are supposed to bloom though I took this photo in November. There are actually quite a few sakura that bloom in autumn and winter and if you have the chance you will be able to capture the blossoms with fiery red autumn leaves at parks like Jomine Park, Saitama prefecture, Sakurayama Park in Gunma or in Shinjuku Gyoen Park, Tokyo. What always delights me is sakura covered in fallen snow. fuyuzakura (aka Fuyu no Sakura vers 2)

So, do any of you remember how I was always moaning about how much I disliked how fuyu no sakura had turned out? Well, it turns out that I disliked it so much I decided it was simply better to try to rewrite it instead of continuing it. Version 2 is bigger, badder, and beefier. The plan is to keep the premise but with a better story line and characterization, plus getting rid of weird plot holes. And also to tell the entire story in the actual story and not half of it in the author’s notes, because apparently 2014 me found this impossibly difficult. That being said, here’s a strategically truncated excerpt (consisting of several snippets woven together to make something more or less cohesive). from the first chapter:

FUYUZAKURA

a branch blows off, petals scattering, leaves falling; winter blossom.

As the others reluctantly returned to the war, as battle waged around them, Sakura pumped Hyuuga Neji full of chakra until he was glowing with it, until his leaking veins thrummed more with hers than with his.

It was not so difficult to destroy something, but hers was a power that could both fell a city and then raise it up from its ashes. Hers was a power that had scores of people worshipping on their knees with her name on their lips. Hers was a power that could snatch a soul right out of the hungry mouth of the waiting Grim Reaper, so long as the heart had a single beat left to be had. 

And yet Neji was so close to the edge it was a miracle he wasn't falling over.  “Sakura,” he murmured, his eyes heavy and soft. Accepting. “That’s enough…”

“Shut your fucking mouth,” she snarled into his face, her voice spun high and thin with sudden wrath. Her hands shook but her focus narrowed to something finer than the space between cells, finer than the precipice on which this man’s life hung. “Who are you to tell me ‘enough’?”

Neji’s eyes widened, and the stream of healing chakra rushing from Sakura’s small, bird-like hands swelled into a massive torrent, setting the both of them aflame. Their bodies became pyres almost as fiercely brilliant as her eyes, and just like that, something clicked into place, a thread was pulled, the cosmic order was shifted: something changed. Even as it began to fade, Hyuuga Neji's existence pulsed back into existence.

And Haruno Sakura's existence became brittle to divine interference.

Haruno Sakura died on the eve of her seventeenth birthday, the war many months over.

She had always imagined that her death would be dramatic, noble, significant. Perhaps it would be an august spectacle of self-sacrifice, or a savage, glorious battle for her life against a better foe, or a tragic betrayal from an unexpected front. Perhaps the thing that downed her would be a wicked blade or some matchless poison or a jutsu so devastating even she could not recover from it.

In the end, it was none of those things. What Sasori of the Akatsuki and a war against a god had failed to do was accomplished by a seemingly ordinary heart attack. 

It was something that Sakura should have been able to heal — should have, but could not.

When Haruno Sakura opened her eyes, moments after her death, she was no longer merely Haruno Sakura. She was now also a little girl named Fuyuno Sakaki, curled up pathetically in a dim alley in a world that wasn't her own. Seventeen going on four, Sakura had perspective on things that Sakaki simply could not understand, because Sakaki had not been old enough, or jaded enough, or raised as a killer in a military society, and Sakura was all of those things.

She knew now what had happened to her new parents, why they had died. That they had died. She knew the people who had slaughtered them. Knew where to find those people.

Knew how to kill them.

With fluttering fingers, Sakura spun a genjutsu that fell silkily over her shoulders like a cloak, shrouding her tiny body from prying eyes. And then, with barely a thought, more naturally than breathing, she summoned chakra to her feet and began to trek up the side of the nearest building.

The roof was filthy from lack of human presence, and the vantage it gave her was not high enough to suit her needs. It was, however, enough for her to spot a skyscraper thrice as tall not too far away; in the dying sunlight, the steel and glass tower loomed over everything in its near vicinity, more than capable of giving her the bird's eye view she wanted. A few roofs hops and she was exactly where she needed to be.

From the ledge on which she crouched, Sakura could see the hectic cityscape of Ueno, Tokyo spread out below her, all of its metal behemoths and glowing lights made humbler by distance. Her eyes searched for structures that seemed more familiar than most, landmarks to trigger a memory not her own.

What came to eye first was a vibrant, multi-storied shopping mall that lit up the entire block around it. It was a huge, fluttering rainbow of colour, extremely hard to miss, and exactly what Sakura was looking for.
