NASA’s Lunar Orbiter pics from 1967/8 were deliberately fuzzed and downsampled to hide US spying capabilities / Boing Boing
In 1967, the Lunar Orbiter missions sent back exciting — but grainy and low-rez — photos of the moon’s surface.
But it turns out that the Orbiters’ photos were actually super-high-rez, shot on 70mm film and robotically developed inside the orbiters, with the negs raster-scanned at 200 lines/mm and transmitted to ground stations using an undisclosed lossless analog image-compression…

Hi there! :) I’d like to introduce myself!
I’m a programmer--but I’m also an artist. The two aren’t quite as unrelated as you’d think--programming has a certain art to it that’s involved. Not only in the idea of *what* to program, but also in the fact that we’re creating a new world with programming--one where the laws of physics are completely under our control, one that can look however we want it to look--if it even has visual dimensions! We can create worlds and we can have fun! Just like in art! In art we can create worlds with new laws of physics and we can create worlds that have characters that don’t or can’t exist in reality! I think in an ideal career, I’ll someday be able to blend my passion for both and really create something unique and fun for everyone. Both art and programming are full of fulfillment and full of excitement for me and I’m excited to do both! But both are full of trials and tribulations and struggling and spending hours trying just to get your code or your piece of art to look good enough to pass inspection.
It’s then that I just remember that sometimes you just need to put on a scarf, light up a cigarette, and take a walk while your code compiles and your paint dries.
