Since the holidays are coming up this popped into my mind. Is there any special holidays celebrated in galahd?
Uff. There are, yes. I just haven’t plotted them all out yet. But I’m happy to talk about those I have already decided upon.
Day of Remembrance (Dimatu Mitamnios)
It’s the day where they remember the dead in general. The Galahkari gather in public spaces and the story tellers tell the tales of important happenings during history. After that they will sing a song called avicaoran mitamnios (song of remembrance) and spill water around the community fire. After that it’s basically one huge party. I wrote a little splurge about it here. The holiday in general lasts for two days on Galahd (first day is the party and the second is generally celebrated at home with close family), but in Insomnia it’s reduced to one evening because it isn’t recognized in Lucis. Haven’t decided on a concrete date for this one yet.
Day of the First Storm (Dimatu Ona Kapaitahs)
This is not a happy one. It’s tied towards this story here where there is a voice on the autumn storms that entices the unwary out to sea to keep it company. It’s the believe that this is Galahd’s punishment for forgetting the name of the person who sacrificed their life to call the storm that sank the black ships of the Conqueror King. At the end of summer each island builds a raft and when the first autumn storm hits one Clan (it’s a different one each year) crafts a puppet during the time the storm lasts. After it clears, it doesn’t matter if it’s the middle of the night, the people gather at the shore and send the puppet to sea on the raft in hopes that the puppet will appease the voice for the year and make it stop singing. (It has never worked, but still they keep trying for what else can they do to atone?)
Shadow of Pitioss (Tenebraht Pitiossk)
It’s the longest night of the year. The celebration (more like a vigil) starts at sundown with lighting the lights of the public places of each town/village. Basically people bring lanterns and fairy lights and built more camp fires until the night is as bright as they can make them. Then the oldest stories they remember are told. Stories of how Ifrit burned Solheim, how the Astrals warred amongst each other (these are the only stories where the Astrals are named in full) and the Wandering Years before they settled in Galahd. Stories of how the scourge first came to be, stories about Pitioss and how there was a woman once that Bahamut hated so much he imprisoned her within the deepest shadows of that place.
First Dawn (Ona Eohsa)
That’s the longest day of the year. People stand up before the first light of the day to watch the dawn. After that it’sone big party until sundown. In Galahdian religion the dawn of the longest day of the year marks the time when their planet was gifted with the sun. (It’s a bit of a holdover from Solheim.) Like in Solheim, this day is the first day of the new year. The stories told during that day are those of new life and hope and victory.
Those are all I have for now. There’s going to be at least two more, but I haven’t got anything concrete on those now. One is going to be the celebration of them first settling in Galahd and the other a commemoration of the day the Black Ships of the Conqueror King were first seen on the horizon.
