Blog #3 Place
When asked what “place” means to me, I try to think about more than just a specific location or setting, as place can be anywhere, or nowhere. To me, a place is somewhere that gives you an awareness of who or where you currently are in life. There, you decide how you feel about yourself, your situation, and if you are content there. Whether or not you are, you then have to make a decision if you want to stay put, descend to a worse place, or ascend to a better one. Place is where you decide to be, no matter what obstacles or blessings you receive. No matter where I am, I want to be at a place where I can be the best I can be, do the best I can do, and help others be where they can be the happiest in life.
Each of these 10 images drew my eye because they caused me to view otherwise ordinary objects or scenes in a different perspective. Even a composition of a simple scene can cause one to see shapes, colors, and other obvious or vague details that are of significance to the viewer. Normal, commonplace substances become interesting and remarkable, while the features of nature are enhanced with more beauty and life.
Passage of Time; Ode to Potato Bread
My third proposal is called “Shoes for Every Occasion.” The main, physical properties in the photos will be one couch, a seated model shown from the waist to their legs, and five different types of footwear. The composition will be structured as if resembling a panorama, with emphasis on the model’s legs and shoes or socks. While the shoes and articles of clothing will be in color, the couch along with the rest of the background will be in varying shades of gray. There will only be one model with their selection of footwear that will fit the mood for each of the five pictures.
When I heard the phrase that inspired the title for this proposal, I wished to literally represent that idea through different situations and moods represented in one setting. The model would not position their legs in just one manner for each of the five photographs with different pairs of shoes. Most people, no matter what their personality may be, have an idea of how they should behave during certain occasions, in addition to what pair of shoes are best suited to wear during those events. For example, the model would position their legs in a more relaxed manner wearing comfortable slippers at home than they would wearing heels or dress shoes at a formal social gathering. At least one photo will depict the model wearing just socks, or simply being barefooted. This various positions will help the idea of “shoes for every occasion” through various colors and moods.
My second proposal involves the art of bread-making. A handful of ingredients will serve as the main focus of the composition, and a few tools involved in baking will be added as props that will provide additional information to the main theme. A generic shape will be used as the base for the main subject matters for the sake of organization and appearance. I will use my camera to take photos directly above the subjects after each stage of bread-making in order to capture the shape and demonstrate the concepts of change and time.
I wish to demonstrate a natural cycle involving change and time within five photos. It will be simpler to focus on as few elements as possible to remove unnecessary distractions, so I will find a bread recipe with around five to six ingredients. The photos might take place in an environment other than the kitchen, mostly because that is a common setting for preparing food. Most likely they will be placed outside to create a more natural mood to the overall theme of cycle and change. Using the natural light of the sun will help create warmth to the images, while shadows will help demonstrate the passage of time. Overall, each step will be photographed at different points of the day, which will help me portray how it takes time in nature for elements to change, and how even we as humans are able to help affect this change for our sake.
