“I’m quite a private person, so I often struggle with the public aspect of being an activist, and the need to get one’s voice out there and above the parapet. I have a complex relationship with that dynamic, so that has had an impact on how much I throw myself at things,” she says. “[I keep] my private life and my political musings to myself. My activism is public, sometimes private, but mostly public, and I’m OK to shout out about that kind of stuff, but everything else is mine.”

It does feel like this is a pretty incredible moment. And I wonder if it kind of is particularly validating after all the various ups and downs that we’ve spent the last hour discussing. How does it feel?
You’re actually making me really emotional. It’s interesting, there are performances along the way that, of course, given either audience reaction or critical reaction, one gets a bit flummoxed about why one’s not nominated. Like for The Fall. No nominations for anybody in those. Director, writer, actors. That confused me. At those moments you think ‘gosh, what’s the barometer?’ I think at the time, feeling the same with Great Expectations. That got little attention from people. And then now Sex Ed. You never know, you never know. And all you can do is keep showing up, and following your heart, and doing it for yourself, and sometimes doing it to keep a roof over your children’s heads. And try and make good, sound, ethical, and sometimes hopefully profound choices. But at the end of the day, if you’re doing it for you, and you’re confident & proud of what you put into it and how you’ve shown up for it, for yourself, and for your fellow actors and artists, then it doesn’t really matter at the end of the day what the reaction is. Except to say, it feels really great when there is this kind of attention for something like this. And it does, it makes me really emotional because there were a lot of years in between that season 3 [of X-Files] and today. There’s been a couple of decades, and so I am even more grateful, as overwhelmed, even more grateful and feel very, very blessed to be in this place in my dotage.

Anderson explained that any nervousness she had about joining this juggernaut were put to rest as soon as she started. “Above anything else,” she said, “what stands out is just how supported I felt through the whole process—supported by production, supported by the researchers, supported by the hair and makeup team [and so on]. It’s really like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. And, and I’ve heard other actors say the same, that it’s been one of their favorite jobs— they just want to keep coming back.”

Portraying Thatcher, she says, was the most technically difficult performance of her career, not that that stopped her: “When you take risks, there is a possibility that you will humiliate yourself and fall flat on your face. I knew I was going to throw everything at it, and if people reacted by saying what a car crash it is, I would just have to deal with that and maybe go to bed for a month.”
