Gabrielle d’Estrées: The Woman Who Nearly Became Queen of France
Few royal mistresses wielded as much influence as Gabrielle d’Estrées. As the beloved companion of King Henry IV of France, she was far more than a favorite at court. Gabrielle bore the king several children, served as one of his closest political advisers, and encouraged his conversion to Catholicism—a pivotal decision that helped bring stability to a nation torn apart by decades of religious conflict.
Henry IV openly acknowledged his devotion to Gabrielle and reportedly intended to marry her, despite the controversy such a union would have caused. She was even granted titles and honors that suggested she was being prepared for a royal future. However, those hopes ended abruptly when Gabrielle died suddenly in 1599 at just 26 years old, only months before the king's marriage plans could become reality. Her untimely death altered the course of French history and remains one of the great "what ifs" of the Bourbon monarchy.
