The series follows a father's desperate search for his nine year old son who disappears one morning on the way to school. Full of self-loathing and guilt, he clings to his son's drawings of a blue monster puppet who becomes his only ally in the pursuit to bring his son home.
"I'm thirty-six years old, I love my family, I love baseball, and I'm about to become a farmer. And until I heard the Voice, I'd never done a crazy thing in my whole life."
Field of Dreams (1989) dir. Phil Alden Robinson
The Mastermind (dir. Kelly Reichardt) x VIFF 2025.
It's easy to believe Josh O'Connor might be able to get away with almost anything. He plays a reckless husband and father, moonlighting as a small-time New England art thief in the 1970 who's able to slip by and charm his way out of most of his troubles until his luck runs out. Reichardt brings her minimalist, unsentimental aesthetic to the heist genre before exploring the mundanity of going on the run during the height of American political activism. Her slow-moving, patient tone reveals little character moments of a no-good man incapable of reforming for anyone and constantly letting down his family.
Screened at the 2025 Vancouver International Film Festival as part of the Special Presentations series.
