I just finished up the 5th out of 8 weeks "Abstract Expressionists/New York School" online course, offered for free by MoMa. This week was Rothko. And Shwoo! Did I have some technical difficulties! He predominantly worked in oils, and numerous transparent layers. I tried to recreate these transparent layers with acrylic but if you are familiar with painting, you know you can't simply add water. The only medium I had on hand was my glossy #GAC800 which y'all k ow I love for my fluid art, but the layers just started beading up. It was comical. I persevered though. This doesn't have near the depth of a true Rothko despite having at LEAST 8-10 layers of various color on each layer. This in depth learning process and studio component has really given me a greater appreciation for each artist.
