Though it may not seem that way at first, I'd argue that NGE has some speculative evolution qualities to it. Especially considering that the Angels were originally meant to be the creatures inhabiting the Earth instead of humans and their kind.
I make a more specevo-adjacent overview of Gaghiel, the Sixth Angel. I feel like this series gets incredibly overlooked in its spec potential. What would an Angel-dominated world look like? I've considered this the entire time watching the series.
Perhaps there is an entire ocean of Gaghiels.
