bonus minmo:
you know what's funny? i didn't even care that much about the plot with godwyn becoming the death prince, and never thought too deeply about the implied close relationship between godwyn, miquella, and malenia. they were neat subtle plotpoints that i appreciated, but didn't delve any deeper into beyond the surface level in-game presentations.
even with that in mind, i still thought for sure—FOR SURE—that we would be getting more information about these plots in the DLC.
and now that we didn't? i am slowly becoming obsessed with godwyn, and his relationship with the cursed twins.
it's like my brain is in disbelief. as soon as we got that DLC teaser picture with miquella, i just unconsciously believed that everything involving miquella would be explored, including the castle sol godwyn plot, and the (assumed) godwyn statue sheltering the twins in haligtree town.
and now that miyazaki has tentatively announced that there are no further plans for elden ring (at least currently), i'm struggling to parse that there will be questions left forever unanswered.
to be noted: i'm not new to souls. i've been playing these games for a decade, and quite thoroughly lost myself in bloodborne lore for a good few years when it came out. i am very, very used to the standard vague and open-to-interpretation style of storytelling, and environmental storytelling.
however, it's worth it to note that elden ring is the first time we've had such a hefty, cohesive storyline. and yet, i feel the gaps in the narrative are far more empty and lacking than in any souls game prior.
it's hard to explain in text, but my analogy of soulsborne lore is a tray of cupcakes with a very light amount of sprinkles spread evenly with careful intent over each cupcake. and er lore is a tray of cupcakes where most of the cupcakes are doused in sprinkles—sometimes too many sprinkles—and there's a couple cupcakes left that only have one or two sprinkles, otherwise barren.
does that make sense?! like, the gaps in the storyline are just so uneven. we get an overabundance of narrative in some areas, and have major gaps in others.
i guess i was more interested in the godwyn storyline than i even realized. i always thought of it as an unresolved plot, but was thoroughly self-assured we would be seeing more of it. and...we didn't! and i'm frustrated!
i'm a silent hill 2 remake hater
i rescind anything positively i said about it—i was influenced by hype
i won't say it's bad or anything, but i genuinely feel like it's... a non-game. like, going forward, when i get the urge to play silent hill 2, there is a 0% chance of me reaching for the remake over the original
it's like playing a worse version of sh2 that's been so blatantly bloober-fied. that development team has latched onto their tropes, gimmicks, and niches and couldn't be pried away from them with a damn crowbar. every game they make! every single game!
and, as usual, the community around the game is what fuels my haterade. because the lot of you are fucking looney tunes bonkers with the comically overdone praise this remake gets. it's genuinely not that fucking good.
and i will slit the next person to say the new voice actors are better than the original. these people probably never even played the original and wouldn't even know how to install it to save their lives. these new "fans" would probably think the hd collection voice acting is better than the original, too. anything that sounds more studio produced! higher production value = good!
the new voice actors sound like your bog-basic, standard, generic video game voices. there's nothing unique about the performances. i wouldn't even be able to pick their voices out of a line of other generic, modern protagonist voices. guy cihi and monica horgan have absolutely singular, memorable, and unique voices and deliveries. but that means it's bad because guy cihi doesn't sound like a generic, triple-A produced male protagonist.
but that's just the way it always is with these braindead series newcomers: "triple-A modern game good! old game bad!" just like how a majority of fallout fans have never even played the original fallout games because they're too fucking dumb. no floating quest markers! strategy turn-based combat! classic TTRPG-to-cRPG gameplay elements! all of it's too hard! need bethesda to hold my hand! waaah! where's my quest marker!
i am the lord of all that is golden!
silent hill 3 let's play preview: cheryl/heather appearance rant
my credentials (lol):
you knew it was coming.
here it is:
i am
a
MGS3 DELTA REMAKE HATER!
they gave ocelot an overly sharp, aged appearance—the whole point of ocelot looking boyishly young in mgs3 is because he is boyishly young. he is a 19 year old eccentric who just met the man he will devote the rest of his life to. he is blatantly infatuated—annoyingly and endearingly so. he is naïve. he is the immature side of ocelot we never saw previously in mgs1 and 2.
he was meant to be- well... cute.
and for the people concerned with ocelot's visual continuity: tell that to the troy baker face scan in mgsv. the fact is ocelot has always looked different between the solid snake and big boss games.
egregiously, they made the boss thinner and younger-looking. she is a 40 year old woman, and she looks more like ocelot's sibling than she does his mother. like, really, how does the ps2's lower quality depict the boss's age better than a modern game with all its expanded texture memory limits? oh... because they did it on purpose. woman must be hot.
snake looks like some alien abomination between mgsv kiefer bb, peace walker bb, and hints of mgs3 naked. every time he opens his mouth to speak, i get sent to the depths of uncanny valley.
the skin textures all have this plastic-y barbie doll sheen to them, especially emphasized on the female characters. EVA doesn't even look like a human being.
and the control layout...
why did they even bother adding faux "legacy" controls when THEY'RE NOT LEGACY. the control layout is fucking incomprehensible! they genuinely couldn't do a basic mirror of the actual original control layout?
and of course, as usual, everyone loves the remake. even though remakes have always been, and will continue to be, utter generic trash to appeal to generic audiences.
oh, and they removed the hammer and sickle from the intro.
gotta add censorship!
