Galations 4 - MW

The word “adoption” in verse 5 gives me so much emotions in writing this.

verse 5: to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.

Caught in so much emotions because my sis and I were adopted. What I heard from my sis was we were seperated because she was too naughty and was influencing me to do bad stuff. So the family decided to let another family to adopt her instead.

To be adopted sounds negative, I used to think or feel rejected because my parents did not want me, I’m not good enough or whatever reason it is, it gives a negative perspective. In my sis case, she’s not a good girl, her behaviour was not pleasing to the family and she was “kicked out” from the family.

In christianity, it actually tells people that we are not good enough, “ You are a sinner” “ You need to repent, you need a Saviour” Yes, we are sinners and need God, we are not worthy, we are not the perfect lamb…

But if we repent…

God adopts us even we are still sinners, even we still lie sometimes, even we still curse when we are mad.

Verse 7: so you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

Paul is bringing up two things here, slavery and also liberty. He was concerned about his fellow brothers in Galatia that even after they experienced liberty, they still by nature will be tempted to fall onto slavery. Paul didn’t sound as angry as he was in Chapter 1 here, instead, he was actually reminding them on about Christ, about their heart when they first received Paul, and he was affirming them and was concerning about them more than condemning them. 

I wish I could be present with you now and change my tone, for I am perplexed about you.

And interestingly right after this, he gave an example of Haggar & Sarah. It could be anything, but he chose this. “Cast out the slave and her son!” Galatians 3 talk about how Christ fulfilled the promise that God had for Abraham. The Spirit through faith was given to us, freely. We don’t need to earn it, we just need to believe and have faith. See, if Haggar and her son was still in house, and Abraham didn’t send them away, how is this freedom going to come to us? Every time I read about this, I always empathise Ismael and Haggar. What did they do wrong, do deserve such treatment? God chose them to be apart of this story because they are the consequences from the flesh. And sometimes when we recognised that in our life, don’t we always empathise with it? I don’t think God wants me to let go of this. I don’t feel like He is speaking to me to walk away from it. Verse 21,

Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not listen to the law?

This is the law, if you are so desire to be under the law not faith, why are you choosing and picking which law to command and which law to forfeit? He said send away your fleshly desires, the slave, the fruits that came out from that. We have to learn how to send things away from us that is not from God. Maybe some of them are physical things, but it can also be things in your heart. Lust, unforgiveness, hatred, fear, and etc. Don’t play around with it. Face it before God, honestly and humbly. And He surely He will say the same as well, because He called us to be free, because of Christ. Not a freedom through our flesh, but a freedom that is everlasting because is through Christ.
