it aint just medusa for ovid.
i know ovids medusa gets alot of flak and swak but god damn there are other versions where I honestly have massive issues too. Like, I get that he is trying to capture human nature's bad side, or whatever, but honestly, he kinda just starts to do like… opposite myths.
WHICH is FINE until it becomes too mainstream, like it becomes the main version people go to. To me it's just as much satire as Lucian (my beloved)
I fucking hate his Polyphemus SO MUCH SO MUCH he took this beauty and the beast unrequited love story, where polyphemus makes a lot of beautiful songs and poems for his childhood friend galetea and sometimes Is rejected but takes it like a CHAMP and cheers himself up and tells himself there's basically other fish in the sea and that he shouldn't be sad or irrational and IS NOT A INCEL, VERY HEALTHY REJECTION (or not rejection?? since she does approach him when he's sleeping but leaves when he awakes. i think the implication is that they're both too embarrassed and scared to tell each other their feelings omg, so cute and they have a kid together but we have only fragments of that) and ovid turned it into him killing her other lover?????? That's the fucking opposite of the myth!!!!!!
as always so much didn't survive and ovid is one of the oldest complete versions but its not the only one and I hate that its just like the only thing people use. Theocritus's Idylls is my favorite
