The Original Series shuttlecraft which, for budgetary reasons, was never initially included in the proposal for Star Trek. The model and landing sequences each episode would’ve taken too much time and money, which is why the transporter was used instead.
However, the model company AMT really, really wanted to license and sell Star Trek models. As part of the deal to secure the rights, AMT built the 3/4-size shuttle exterior shell, as well as the interior props, for use in the show. It first appeared in the episode The Galileo Seven.
