dear Abbadon Sandolphon, we've been way too out of touch...
after much discussion, my bff and I had the shared epiphany that this tragic story of baldur's gate ocs can be likened to that of dear evan hansen. Now indulge me, if you will:
It begins with the untimely death of Sandolphon, a character who continues to haunt the narrative, appearing only as an apparition, idealized fantasy, or bastardized caricature of his real self. We never hear from Sandolphon directly while he was alive, so we'll never know what he was really like. Anything we see of him is from the perspective of others, told to suit their own narratives.
For those not in the know, the premise is this: Sandolphon, beloved local philanthropist, is murdered. Loved by all, his community grieves his sudden slaughter. In the wake of his death, his surviving identical twin brother (that is, Metatron) hunts down the murderer for revenge.
But, having grown up so close, Metatron is, following Sandolphon's death, understandably very unwell. He was always the more awkward and reserved of the two, and without his effortlessly likable brother to guide him, he has no idea how to connect with other people.
As he travels the Sword Coast on his quest for revenge, he comes across many people who knew and loved his brother. Some who welcome him and share in the grief and listen, some who don't even know Sandolphon died.
Entranced by this new attention, Metatron cannot resist it. He cannot help but dig into it, and fish for more. Completely unable to cope with Sandolphon's death and unable to handle any criticism or any view of his brother as anything other than wholly perfect, Metatron begins distorting the story of his brother into something far more twisted, saying whatever he needs to hold desperately onto attention. He uses the grief to get close to people. And eventually, he starts pretending to be Sandolphon.
Therefore, Metatron is our Evan.
Evan was pulling the shit that he did at 17, but Metatron is 25, and pursues his deception to lengths that I would argue are far more unsound. Metatron does display the same socially anxious and self-deprecating traits, and has a very similar affect and presentation to Dear Evan.
Our analogous Jared is the murderer, infamous durge and local "problematic" butch deep gnome, Gamble Snuffbait. And honestly, I can't think of a character whose personality is more spot on to him than Jared. Sardonic, edgy, and prone to holding people at arm's length, Gamble is truly the Jared of the Sword Coast.
Though they are by no means friends, given that Metatron is hunting down Gamble under oath of vengeance, Gamble realizes that Metatron is 1.) probably too much of a pussy to really kill him, and 2.) prime ragebait lolcow material, and instead opts to hang around, to taunt him like a 4channer vulture descending upon an easily mockable mentally ill carcass.
Often, this consists of him making a plethora of inappropriate jokes where Metatron is always the punchline. One of his favorite running bits is to insinuate that he had been having a secret steamy affair with Sandolphon before murdering him. Metatron's reaction is, he says, "priceless, every time."
