I maybe should have bought that hidden object game that said Halloween Stories on it, instead of playing a game from my own Steam Library (even if that was the more practical thing to do). The reason why I say this is because I decided to play Ghost Files 2 for my Halloween themed hidden object game.
This made a lot of sense, while it had been a year (ish) since I played the first Ghost Files, it was a mystery detective game that involved the supernatural to a certain degree, so I thought that would be a good play. Most hidden object games that are a series, tend to revolve around the same player character, or at least tend towards the same themes. Like Dark Parables or Mystery Case Files (if you don’t include the first one).
To say I was kind of disappointed is an understatement. It was certainly a detective story, and for a while I was invested in the story (I kept thinking my detective fellow was going to get caught), but… it was kind of silly. I mean, the way hidden object games work tend to be a bit silly because none of that tends to work in real life. This may be why most hidden object games tend towards the fantastical, even if there isn’t a magical or paranormal reason behind it.
The more fantastical the story is, the more you ignore how dumb having to solve all these puzzles are in real life. Unfortunately, Ghost Files 2, is far more in the vein of grounded (sort of) mystery drama, that did make these convoluted ways of getting around or problem solving seem… meh.
Oh well, maybe next year I will buy the Halloween Stories series or something similar, or maybe just dip back into Mystery Case Files again. Just not at the moment, because there are other things to play.
