Buying local
Buying local is a thing I like and support but don’t actually commit to enough. In the midst of all the Amazon news over the last six months, I realized that I have fallen down the Amazon hole pretty hard and want to crawl my way back out.
Right now I’m thinking particularly about games. Supporting a local game shop means you’re also supporting community space and the ability for your local nerds to geek out all day at a job they love and to share that knowledge with you when you need it. It’s not hard for me to get behind that. So I’ve been trying to visit and familiarize myself with the shops around LA, of which there are surprisingly (to me) a lot. Right now I’m trying to find a place that will sell me a Nintendo Switch, because, um, business expenses. Right. Yes. Research.
I am still mostly an introvert who gets social and time anxiety, though, so I would love it if someday all businesses have drone delivery/pickup. Can you imagine? Freshest dairy ever from the farm you would never drive to. Specialty butchers and bakeries without crossing all over town. And the big box stores with their fancy fast free shipping would have a smaller advantage.
Table Top RPGs and Friends
There used to be a game shop in the Kingsbay, GA area called Night Games. I am not sure if it was spelled with an N or a Kn but it was a game shop I used to go to often. It was one of the first game shops I ever went inside. I still remember my first visit. I was looking at the games and figurines and these kids came up to me. The started talking to me and I was so confused. I had no idea at all…

Alright everyone I’m heading out to New Orleans on vacation tomorrow so I won’t be keeping up the blog too much in terms of asks or whatnot. My queue’s all set up so it’ll be business as usual! Tried to go through and tag all my critical roll spoilers for that anon so hopefully none fell through the cracks - sorry again anon! I’ll be back next week if you can wait on help or answers until then, but I’ll probably still be somewhat available through mobile sporadically. Happy gaming everyone!
Anyone have any suggestions for good game shops in NOLA while I’m there?
I went to a game shop to talk about changing games that were bought recycled bc my friend said he’d give me his game for free after I’d already bought it at the store. I did get a reply but it was confusing for me but I didn’t dare to ask any further because the man at the counter seemed like one of those ppl who would roll their eyes a lot at you if you don’t simply nod and say bye. sighhhh now I think I have to sail an e-mail to the store to ask about it but I feel awk about that too
A story of my recent travels
Just went to visit a game store in small town colorado. Entered and the place was huge but without any stock, just a handful of tables and about 6 guys working on putting up a shelf. I waved and said hi and told them I was sorry for interrupting. None of them responded. I awkwardly walked to the front to peruse the merchandise. They had about ten items. I apologized again saying that I was sorry if they were working on opening. One of the guys told me that they’d been open since February. Awkwardness intensifies. I explained that I was from out of town. One of the more engaged men asked me if there were any shops I like where I was from. I picked one. His coworker slinked over and said “I fucking hate that place, it’s nothing but families and hipster trash. They don’t focus on any one game like Magic, it’s bullshit”. He basically summed up what I like about the place. Then the friendlier guy asked what I played. I told him Pathfinder. Another guy who was listening proceeded to tell me the history and basic gameplay of pathfinder. At this point I was becoming really annoyed about being condescended to by a bunch of unfriendly men. I told him I knew all that stuff, as I’ve played off and on for several years. He scoffed and said “Yeah right, whatever. I be you don’t even know it’s a D20 system.” I left right after feeling extremely miffed.
Why are game store websites all so terrible. Like, why is word of mouth still the best way to find a shop in a new area? I want to know three things when I'm googling for a new shop: where you are, when you're open, and how much will it cost me to play. Your weekly schedule is largely useless until I know these things. Knowing the games you support is useful in addition to the above though.
